My boxed SNES collection with gaming commentary and pictures galore

A few weeks ago my fansite (RVGFanatic) turned 10 years old. To celebrate the milestone, I published an in-depth article featuring pictures and commentary galore of my boxed North American Super Nintendo collection. Rather than just show pictures of my games, being the 10 year anniversary I wanted to go the extra mile so I ended up highlighting a ton of games from each shelf. From the "lesser known" gems to guilty pleasures to the very best and more. I applied the following categories to each shelf as I felt it would make it more fun to write and subsequently read.

Best Game — What I consider to be the best game on that shelf.

Worst Game — What I consider as the worst game on that shelf.

Guilty Pleasures — Games that I enjoy but aren’t necessarily good.

Unsung Heroes — Overlooked games that I find to be high quality.

Most Disappointing — Games I thought I would like a lot but don’t.

Most Surprising — Games I didn’t expect much from but delivered.

Most Wanted — Games I’ve still yet to play but most excited to play.

Miscellaneous — Random notes on other games not yet highlighted.

BTW I would love to see more people apply these categories (or something similar) to each shelf of games that they own. It would be fun to read

So whether you're a diehard SNES fan or a casual one, I hope the article inspires you to dig up an old SNES game or two to replay or maybe even try for the very first time.

  • Started browsing the article. Looks great so far, I'll finish looking later today most likely. It's nice to see some in depth reviews of a collection
  • Steve's writing is always very good, I look forward to going through it and recommend everyone does the same.
  • I love rvgfanatic. I check it out pretty often, especially when I'm thinking about making a SNES purchase.

I love the references you make to old gaming magazines in your reviews. Makes for solid perspective. Keep up the great work!
  • Awesome post Steve! I really enjoyed reading and going over your list. Seems like you've got all the bases covered. I did notice you do not own Aerobiz/Supersonic however. Have you tried either of these? As weird as it is, Aerobiz is one of my favorite games on the system.

You plan on showing all your SFC goodness?
  • Really enjoyed that article Steve and your collection kicks ass!
  • 10 years is awesome, I'm not sure I bookmarked your site that long ago but it has been a very long time non the less. Always a good read, I highly recommend it people.

    Cheers to you Steve.
  • Great read. Love your site as always

For what ever reason, I never visited your site.  Its really well done and interesting, I am adding it to my rotation.  How often do you update/add to it?
  • Good reading man, solid review!
  • I'm curious Steve, do you have all the manuals for your boxed SNES games? Did you originally buy the games complete, or did you piece them together?
  • I know the post is about SNES, but I'm curious about the Saturn stuff. What got you interested in that as well? And are those two the only systems you have Collections for?

    Also, great read as always

Wow, I recently logged in for the first time in 10 months. I am just checking out this topic I created for the first time and just saw all your replies just now. First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone for the kind words. It means a lot to me that you enjoy my work and my writing style/presentation. I do it all for fun but it certainly makes it worth it when others enjoy it as I do. @ empire, thank you for the compliment.

Not sure how to multi-quote so I apologize in advance for the ghetto multi quoting below (if it doesn't work like how I hope it will).

Ah yes, the references to old gaming magazines. I grew up on EGM and GameFan (and later Super Play in the mid 2000s) and they have all influenced me in one way or another. I like sharing what those publications rated the games (if applicable) right before I share my final thoughts and overall score.

Gracias. I have not tried Aerobiz/Supersonic yet. To be honest, neither game ever intrigued me enough to buy/try. I'm glad you enjoy them though. Simulation games tend to be my least favorite genre, so yeah. As for showing my SFC games, probably not as they're mostly in bins. I don't have any shelf space left and about 65% of my SFC games are cartridge only. I'm good with just displaying my NA boxed SNES and Saturn games.

Thanks for the kind words and adding my site to your rotation. Updates fluctuate based on my schedule, but right now I'm doing around one update per week or so. I just most recently published a review of Ghoul Patrol, and am hoping to launch Nosferatu this Friday night.

I have 98% of the manuals. Only missing manuals for a few random lesser known games but I'm cool with my collection as is. I started out buying them cart only in early 2006 and figured it would be too much (money, time and stress) trying to hunt down boxes and manuals. However, I bought SNES games CIB wherever I could if the price was reasonable. Then one day in early-mid 2006 I bought a lot of manuals off eBay. When it arrived, it brought back such a rush of memories of reading all those manuals in the back of my dad's car as he would drive us home from the video store back in the early-mid '90s. Then my real breakthrough came in 2007 when a lady named Jen in Minnesota sold me like 200 SNES boxes for pretty cheap off eBay. It really gave me a great head start and I then slowly pieced the rest of it from 2007-2012... with my last box purchase being for 3 Ninjas Kick Back. I did most of my box and manual buying in 2007-2008 though, before the market exploded. So yeah, I mostly pieced together my collection bit by bit or in some cases, lot by lot.

The Sega Saturn was my first "collector's love." I bought it in 1999 and my honeymoon period with it was between 2001-2005. At one point, I amassed 350 US, Japanese and PAL Saturn games. I was crazy about it. I bought it in 1999 originally because I wanted to play World Heroes Perfect on it (my favorite gaming franchise from a sentimental POV -- hence my Hanzou avatar) and my brother wanted to play Fire Pro: 6 Man Scramble. Once I fell out of favor with the Saturn in late 2005, I made my way to my 16-bit roots in January 2006. Surprisingly, nearly 12 years later and I still love the SNES as much now as I did then. It's the system that somehow keeps on giving. As for other collections, I have a modest Dreamcast collection of 40-50 games, a very small GBA SP collection and an Everdrive for the NES. Used to have over 200 NES cartridges in the mid 2000s but ended up selling them away to clean up the clutter. I honestly wasn't playing them much and wanted them to go to a good home.

It's great to be back on NA (been busy with life -- new job and new GF) and it was great to see this thread for the first time since I posted in it. All your kind words touched me and I'm happy you enjoyed reading my article/site. Cheers, everyone!
  • Read through your entire 12 shelves article, great job! Great summary of what the SNES library was all about. Added nostalgia points for the short reviews and screen captions similar to the magazines from the 90s.

My tip is you should crack open that Mystical Ninja game. Truly one of the best games for the system!

Nice! I really enjoy how focused the collection is. I'd love to focus on just a couple systems but its so hard to choose

  • Nosferatu the game? I could swear I already read a review you did of that.

Thanks! Glad you had fun reading it. I had a lot of fun writing it. It was like a passion project and almost a culmination of my ten years of being a webmaster for a Super Nintendo based site. Yes, I really need to crack into that Mystical Ninja, especially since I now have a girlfriend where two player co-op is always available at the helm, lol.

@ Bert, I am lucky in the sense that I always had a very focused goal and knew to stick in my lanes. People always ask me what’s next collecting wise or you’ll be back... (to buy more) but nope, I have been done buying essentially since 2012   now I am just a content retired collector who is playing through his massive backlog one game at a time.

@ Brock, you might have read my Nosferatu review on my original RVGFanatic site. I originally wrote and published Nosferatu back in early 2010. I also get to tweak things which is nice
  • I really love the style of the article, absolutely top notch. Not too much that I cant read it in one sitting, and plenty of info for someone like me who didn't get to play much on snes the first go around.
  • you seriously need to play star fox

very good article, excellent even, only problem is it makes me want to play a ton more snes games, many of which i've never played before
  • Wow man, very nicely written and you took time creating it. I will say you mentioned all of my snes favorites including some of the unsung ones.
  • Great site!! Enjoyed it plenty and liked the fact that you seeked out Gunmans Proof, its a game I am currently playing though

Thanks, Koopa. I actually played Star Fox (for the first time ever, at least, thoroughly) a few months ago. It's definitely enjoyable, even in 2017, but I can see how truly mind blowing it must have felt nearly 25 years ago in 1993.

GPX, I finally played Mystical Ninja yesterday! My girlfriend was over and so we cracked it open. It is indeed a very quirky and fun 2 player game that I can't wait to delve into deeper over the next coming weeks. I did play it briefly back in the day, but never played it "seriously enough" to the point where I can claim I've truly played it.

Thanks A2600! Gunman's Proof is one of my favorite SNES games... truly something more people need to play for themselves. Glad you're playing through it now. It's short as hell but it's blast while it lasts. It truly feels like Earthbound meets Link to the Past meets the Wild Wild West.

  • Now Steve my question is I am now entering the fist dungeon, what happens if I die? Do I respawn in the town or at the entrance of the dungeon?
  • Gun and proof is on my short list to play! I picked up a bunch of timewalk games before they went away aswell.
  • Steve, the only other person that likes Brandish with me

Well that's not true, the guy on twitch loved it...

And there's a million of them in Japan so they must over there too
