Picky about variants? Revisions?

I was making a deal with another member earlier and was reminded of this - Player's Choice and Greatest Hits versions of games go somewhat out of their way to mark themselves, and are pretty clear in that they are not "original releases". Same with stuff like "Game of the Year" editions.

It got me thinking though, what about "Rev A" and whatnot? There are (rarely?) differences even in the code sometimes between these versions. And beyond that, it's simply once again not the "original release", even if maybe a little less obviously so than Greatest Hits versions.

So I was curious - how anal are the rest of you when it comes to stuff like this?

Most specifically, I hate the red cases on the PS3 Greatest Hits; they go way out of their way to look different on your shelf, and despite being the same game inside it just kinda feels... cheap I guess?

What are your thoughts?

  • I prefer the original release, but if I don't have the game, I'm going to pick it up regardless of which edition it is. I'd rather have a copy to play and wait to maybe find an upgrade than have no copy and wait for the same game.

Also if there is a complete edition with everything on the disk, I will always hold out for that version.
  • not a fan of the greatest hits versions.

i try to avoid them altogether, but if i find one for an incredible deal i usually pick it up. can always swap later.

eta: rev-a is not something i even look for. makes zero difference to me.

Damn it I've done it again.

  • I personally like getting original versions of games, if I want to just play a game, I get the greatest hits version (if they have any)
  • I would go for Player's Choice stuff on older games as a set. I wouldn't mix it in with original versions though. I really like Super Nintendo PC copies, but if I weren't trying to get them all then I wouldn't have any. As for revs, I prefer non-rev but I won't be bothered if I do have one.
  • What really grinds me is finding used stuff that has a Greatest Hits disc in the regular case. GOTY versions are usually the opposite of GH/PC titles, they have all the added content and a lot of times not any of the tacky stuff added to the art.

This is the unfortunate tale of joining as a member in 2017, and not 5-10 years earlier. Repeated threads with identical/similar themes will likely to

    happen!

As a gamer, I personally don't care too much. If anything, the greatest hits or revisions will likely have less bugs. As a collector on the other hand, I don't go for them intentionally with a few exceptions where some actually are very rare.

If you're the type of person who mocks collectors for their collecting habits, and often say "but games are meant to be played". This thread topic is the perfect reminder that "yes, but we all collect what we want to collect".

nothing wrong with a new discussion!

My opinion has always been if I happen upon a players choice I'll take it. If I find a black label later, I'll keep that only if in better condition. There are some games that I'd rather have black label like Super Mario World, since it's substantially rarer. But for Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, players choice were what I had as a kid, so I opted for those players choice CIB for my collection. It's really a game by game basis. On one hand for a greatest hits they often cheaped out on materials, like PS1 manuals being black and white rather than color, and on the other, a greatest hits should be harder to find considering you need to sell a certain amount as black label before switching. So some I'm pickier than others.

Regarding other variants, I don't really care. Supposedly the hang tab Mike Tysons Punch Out is more sought after, but mine has the tab punched and therefore gets in the way when I'm trying to get the damn game out. So that's kinda annoying

Oh and while on the topic, I much prefer the old PS3 case design with the Spider-Man font. I am starting to collect those early titles just because I think it looks better
  • i don't care
  • Personally I don't care unless they ruin the original box artwork like they did with the batman one shown above. For example, I don't mind the Nintendo Selects. I would prefer the original but I'll go with whatever is cheaper.
  • Generally, it doesn't matter to me. If it's something like a PlayStation game, then the PAL Platinum cases are extremely different, since they're grey opposed to the white spines.

Fine on their own, not too fond of them mixed with the black label games. Nintendo's fine, though, since all they change are the designs of the covers, which is no issue with me.
  • I like keeping both versions. If I buy a lot I'll keep the a copy of both. I prefer any editions that have dlc on disc over those that don't.
  • Doesn't matter for me. I just want a copy of the box for the game I want to play

    X2
  • I only care for GB releases. If it was for xbox or whatever, if its a game I wanted I wouldn't care.
  • Budget label releases are like having the big ugly yellow EBGames sticker on the spine but you can't remove it.
  • I like non-rev A NES boxes/releases but honestly, by and large it's pretty hard to find them. Generally since they're earlier releases they are in worse condition on average than their rev-A counterparts. You really can't be too picky...

Players Choice releases though, I'm not into at all
