NR Reader Research

I've recently been looking into the Gamecube NR Reader. It was a test console used to test prototypes of games, which were put on NR Reader discs. Sadly it doesn't play gamecube games, and only plays NR discs.

Funny enough, I read that this isn't a development console, as they used the NPDP Reader, a console for actually developing games.

I've looked at sold ebay listings, read some websites, and I still want to know some more things about this console. NintendoAge is usually where I get my information on prototpyes or obscure collectibles, so what do you guys got?

Comments

  • I know that a lot of people who would do press stuff would have these so they could review in-development builds. I don't really know a whole lot other than that.
  • I actually own one. Use it to play some prototype/test builds of some games I came across.

There are two versions, PAL and NTSC. The NTSC has a toggle switch to change between Japan and US. Of the games that I have, all but one plays on US.

The games supposedly came from a former Blockbuster employee. He had said that devs used to bring over samples to Blockbuster HQ, which is how he accumulated them. Of the games I bought off him, most are very close to retail. I haven't played through them all to confirm if any differences exist. I do have one, Lost Kingdoms, that is an earlier build. It still has Rune on the title screen, and all kinds of other beta elements.
  • I'm still on the hunt to own one. Got a lot of NR discs, which have no idea what is on them since most are unlabeled. xD

Only one that I own that is labeled is BGDA German which I am guessing would be Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
  • I have one NTSC console with the switch for the US or JP discs and one PAL console. I have a few NR discs for them but nothing very rare.

The developers also used the NR readers a lot because it was easier to use than the NPDP and it would store data in a safer way I think. If you have any specific questions, just ask.

I've got nothing in specific, I just like knowing this type of information before buying.
