Health hazards as a video gamer/collector

This topic is about the health issues relating to being a gamer or a games collector. Just want to hear stories from anyone about any illness you have suffered whilst gaming/collecting. 2 commonest conditions that I have are these:

1. insomnia - being overexcited from playing a great game, and wanting to keep playing, even if my body's ready for a break and it's telling my brain to go to sleep. Or at other times, I have difficulty sleeping when awaiting for a grail to come through my post!

2. hayfever (allergic rhinitis) - buying retro games, often we're exposed to more dust/dirt particles than we would like to admit, and unfortunately I suffer from hayfever, which does not help my poor sinuses!

What have you suffered from?

Comments

  • Brokitis, a lack of money related to buying too many video games.
  • Is tennis thumb a thing? like tennis elbow but the joint in your thumb? lol. I've definitly had that before. And just cramped fingers in general.. I hate the Gameboy Color for this reason. Too small for my hands to play comfotably. I felt discriminated against lol. The Nyko Shock and Rock accessory helps with the smallness of the gameboy color but.. I Gotta mod an original with a color screen soon.
  • I read a story once about someone who played an online pc game for like 24-48 hours straight and ended up dropping dead from a blood clot.
  • It's similar to someone traveling in a car or a plane for an extended period of time. You have to get up and move around every once and a while. You could end up with a dvt or a pe.
  • if you play the same game for 1000+ hours straight, sure
  • The only health hazards are to the Bros in COD that I wreck 1v1
  • Lol. What? Bad case of restless leg syndrome
  • I burnt my finger pretty bad on a soldering iron when transplanting a rom from a bad pcb one time.

Or play against you in a Track & Field contest for a week and end up with a legitimately strained right thumb.

I like the term! How about Wallet Deficiency?

At first, I misread as "bronchitis", which is what I have at the moment. At least games help to fill the time, when you're stuffed with a lot of muck in your chest and you can't move around too much!

lol, you're basically referring to finger cramps. The analogy is more akin to a leg cramp. Though if you don't rest properly and play for days with sore fingers then it becomes more a repetitive strain injury, which then makes it more similar to the tennis elbow analogy.

  • Biggest real health hazard would be bedbugs if you buy stuff from somebody that has them.

Roaches are bad, but bedbugs are way worse.
  • retinal burn-in.. when you've played a game too many hours on a backlit screen in the dark you start to see it when you close your eyes.
  • Back pains after moving a big ass CRT TV

Yeah, my thumbs are pretty diesel.
  • Erections that last more than 4 hours.
  • I got sick the weekend I dove in Gamestop's dumpster to get my Wii U and Amiibo kiosks, could have been coincidence but I feel like the dumpster was to blame.
  • My hands hurt.
  • Hearing loss from playing Guitar Heroes with the Volume at 11.

Laryngitis from screaming into the microphone with Rock Band.

Seriously, I would often end up with a big bruise on my middle finger from the track ball when I would play certain arcade games. Centipede would be an example
  • Swamp ass

I felt the same exact way about the pocket! Too small for my hands, but I couldn’t put it down!
  • Migraines (I get them from playing games to long or by using the 3D on the 3DS.), stress (from worrying about getting that game I really want from LRGs), eye strain (again playing games to long), and carpal tunnel (sitting at a computer all day with weak wrists to begin with).
