This is awesome. I'm gonna put this out there, but I'm not gonna mention to whom this will be for: whoever I receive, I may even just go out and give out gifts to others as well. (That means some of you guys may get two Secret Santas this year! lol)
It's the time of year to give, so why not a little extra? Merry Christmas, everyone!
Eeeh, I'll have to think about it. Last year I saw that the suggested value was $15-$20, and I signed up. I got my secret name and I bought a $20 game that I thought fit the list very well. Then I looked through the reveal threads, and saw that most of the gifts were worth well over $20, and there were even a few people who were obviously disappointed in what they received. (both directly and indirectly, like normally-verbose users posting something like "here's what I got." with a zoomed-out picture of a single $15 item.) So I scrambled and spent an extra $40, because I didn't want my guy/gal to be secretly disappointed if s/he was expecting something within the REAL price range.
Meanwhile, I got an awesome package from my secret santa, definitely worth way more than $20. And really, anticipating and opening that package was genuinely a lot of fun. There's no way I'll be receiving a box of mystery Nintendo goodness from my wife
So I'll have to decide if I want to participate in a $50-$60 secret santa again this year. Maybe I should just be an elf. Or Grinch.

Spend within your budget man, I hope someone wouldn't join in expecting to get more than what they paid or get lucky with their gift.

Since I've been Secret Santa before, let me expand on this a bit, as I'm sure you're not the only one thinking what you mentioned.
We do have a $20 suggestion before shipping cost. Some people like to go beyond that, which is fine (as long as they're not expecting some large public fellation over it).
So expect something worth about $20 from the list you send to Secret Santa. We do have the rule in there that you should expect to go buy something, as I suspect some of the sensed disappointment you mentioned was from people getting $20 worth of stuff from somebody's random doubles pile.
And whatever you get, be gracious about it in public. If you did royally get the shaft (some shit common from a system you don't collect obviously taken from some lazy ass's extras bin), PM me about it and I'll either take it up with Santa or tell you to quit your bitching if your claim is unjust.
Also a friendly reminder, HAVE SEVERAL SPECIFIC <$20 OPTIONS ON YOUR LIST. It gives your buyer lots of options if they're having a hard time finding what you asked for. Also specifics are way better than "I collect RPGs" or "I love shmups".
To clarify, it is not a knock on the hard work that goes into organizing Secret Santa. I am sure it is a lot of work. Just that I like getting started asap.
Count me in! Last year was amazing! I really want to give awesomely this year. I love to get (who doesn't) but now that I have over a year of serious collecting under my belt, I can't wait to share!
