  • Did the "workboy" actually ever get released?

It was a full keyboard and productivity app that had a multiple page promo in NP.

I had a friend with an xband that I remember borrowing for a couple weeks to play MK2 online.

Only one I ever encountered, and the service was expensive and unless you lived in CA the calls to the service were all long distance in the time of expensive long distance calling.

XBAND also was the only way to get the corner cut copy of Doom to allow you to pick which campaign to play and to save if I remember right.

I remember a level select menu patched in by the XBAND. There was also a level select cheat in the game but I think it just skipped when you entered the cheat (no menu). That was a weird experience because the other player would seem to be looking right at you and you'd run for cover only to see him walk away, completely unaware. That's because the game didn't have multiple angles for the sprites. Same for the enemies in single player but they pretty much always saw you.

Still got my XBAND manual around somewhere. What I'd REALLY love to get my hands on is the XBAND keyboard.

I really wish we had that selection option.  The Japanese got a slightly less cheapened setup as they can do that level select natively without the added toy to do it.  I know about the angles I own the game and have for a very long time.  Given its the SNES+FX2 it's a technical marvel the SNES runs it at all and even as well as it does.  It also surprised me too when it came out because the stages themselves the maps in total and geometry was the closest copy to the PC stages.  I found that pretty rotten that the weakest system to run it in that period was the one with the best map conversions.  You would have thought given the room on the CD versions or the Jaguar they could have done notably better with that.  The PSX one though overall was just amazing how well that version stands up especially compared to how terrible the Saturn copy was.

What's the going rate on one of these?

I saw one, and only one, in Akihabara at Super Potato, which I bought for $90. It was complete and really, really good condition. Only time I had actually seen one for sale.
