I always wondered. Who the hell is "McO'River" anyway?? Must have been their only published game..

haha sounds very Irish for an American subsidiary of a Japanese company. I wonder why they chose that name of all names.
  • That's how it most likely went

Tanaka: Herro Yamada-san. We arru making Amelican sabushidialy. Do you havu namu idea?

Yamada, piss-ass drunk: Retsu-see... Amelican namu... MAKKU-OOH-LIBAAAH! *passes out*

Tanaka: Gureito idea, Yamada-san! Arigatou Gozaimasu!

(Sorry for the exaggerated Japanese accents  )

In all seriousness, Japanese people don't speak english well at all, especially at a small developer/publisher like Video Systems, so they most likely picked the first English-sounding name that came through their mind. Basically anything that sounds "Americanish" would have been acceptable in Japan, but not really outside of Japan
  • It's gonna be $1500 now that this thread exists lol. Hashtag NAeffect
  • ^ LOL! $1,750! You heard it here, first!
  • I don't think the NA effect applies to already high priced games. No one was "in the dark" about the rarity of Aero Fighters. It takes it being an uncommon hidden le gem for a game to go from a $5 game to a $50 game. People are willing to drop $20-30 to stay ahead of the curve, but not $700+.
  • Holy crap, now the cheapest on eBay is $800. #NAeffect
  • To hell with that.....
  • No kidding, screw that entirely. That's why so many people can't have some nice things, and get other nice things called Super Everdrives and SD2SNES's instead.
  • Uh, before everyone freaks out, there has been only one sale of a legitimate copy of AeroFighters on eBay since this thread opened. (Two if you count one with a fake label). One sale is hardly attributable to any NA effect.

I think people were mostly joking about that

This thread and everyone in it, is a joke. Myself included for making this post. Just a bunch of crabby old men and entitled children, or crabby old men acting like entitled children. If people want to hype crap up, let them. Quit pitching a childish fit over it.

  • I don't buy repros but you can see why people do if they want to have what looks like a real game and won't pay $1K for the "real thing". Yeesh
  • I'd encourage those aliexpress too close to comfort copies if anything other than spite, but in the end it made more sense to get an everdrive. Why get mad have a fit, get even.
  • Meh, if a game I might be interested in gets to some ludicrously stupid price I just emulate it.  That's why I'll never be a full set collector.

Honestly though I don't even feel comfortable owning expensive games like that.  Its a liability and I'm always afraid something will happen to it.  Stolen, damaged, breathed on wrong, whatever.
  • Why is the first instinct of so many to turn to repros and fakes instead of just buying the (in this case superior) Japanese version Sonic Wings? It's like $40 last time I checked. More and more frauds in this hobby every day it seems.

  • Sonic Wings is a fair argument to make but not all games have the cheap version overseas if you don't mind the missing english. Some still will be less but cost into the hundreds and others not so much. Bonk on Famicom you can get for between 20-30 vs 300 or whatever it is up to now on the NES, yet Bubble Bobble 2 famicom and NES cost much the same. It's all whacked out, emulate or everdrive seems to just make more sense if you don't care to lord an expensive collection over others flashing images online.
  • I'm pretty sure I said the words "no fucking way" out loud when I found my copy at a local bookstore for $6. It's crazy how much this game has spiked.

  • /\ damn at a half price books. they almost never miss price games that crazy. sweet find.
  • To think I sold my copy in 2005 for 50 bucks, and thought I made a killing doubling my money

    Damn it man...

    Holy crap! When was this?
  • The date on the price label is right after Christmas 2012 so I would say maybe in the last week of December 2012 or early 2013?

From my experience with them he got in just before the door slammed shut on that place to find goodies within a matter of days if not hours.  I used to buy there all the time, and I had picked up a game at 10% of the ebay value on SNES too around the same date.  After the new year they started a new store policy and repriced everything on the floor game related to use a mix of averaging the asking price on amazon and the paid prices on ebay and then giving a small percentage on it as their cash offer.  Before that they handled it like a garage sale or random ebay junk where it's just as the store says half price books.  Stuff was half the going value in 2012 or well under that.  Come 2013 it was full asking price on either of those 2 sites unless they fouled up and missed one or put the wrong price on it.  Had he walked into that store and found Aero Fighters on 1/2/13 or shortly after it would have been like what $200 at that point?  I went from being an every day shopper to once a week and if I didn't have one along a route I go I'd probably be once a month if that.
  • I checked and it looks like I found it Jan 5, 2013, so you were almost right VmprHntrD! I have noticed, like you mentioned, that their pricing has gone up to be more in line with other places. I still find a ton of great deals there though (and I just simply love the place!). I suspect AF wasn't in their database due to its rarity, and they must have just slapped a "random Nintendo cart" price on it. It's certainly my luckiest find ever.

That is awesome! It's always cool hearing about these great finds
  • Well got lucky then a few days after the cut I was noticing at my store. Maybe they got lazier at yours about the change up or it was one hell of a deal that slipped through the cracks enough days. Who cares, $6 is far better than $200 then.
