Anyone collecting original Xbox?

  • I looked at my bookcase today and I realized that I have far too many games. I decided it's time to part ways with my work-in-progress xBox set.

If I remember correctly, I have somewhere around 300 games, and I'm planning to keep roughly 20 of them (possibly upwards of 30). I'd like to get rid of the rest of them all in one shot, if possible, along with my xBox magazine discs (not too many of those).

I wanted to open it up to the thread first before I sought other avenues. I'd provide a list of my inventory (obviously) once I have time to make it up, so probably Friday afternoon.

I'm not going to part out specific games at the moment though. That's too much work.

EDITED TO ADD: I was also working on the Platinum Hits games. I believe those are the only doubles.
  • You sure you want to part ways with it all? The Xbox One just started adding backwards compatability and system link for original Xbox games a few weeks ago, so for a lot of people original Xbox games may start becoming relevant again. I still insist on sticking with my original system when it comes to playing original Xbox games though. I finally picked up a component cable for my original Xbox, honestly never realized that many of the games output in higher resolutions until I was looking at the back of boxes lately. Pretty happy I made the purchase.
  • What's a component cable cost anyway? I need one of those
  • I guess I am, it was unintended. But I recently found my XBox and my stash of games.

It is a system I don't think of much, it had some great games like Halo and Outrun 2, but for some reason as a system, I don't think of it fondly like I do of let's say the NES or Dreamcast.

There are a few different types. You can get a generic component cable off amazon or eBay for under $10, those can be either hit or miss. Monster cables are around $35-55 and the Official Microsoft ones are around $35-50. You can also get the HD AV pack which allows you to use any component cables, thats also an official product and is sometimes mislabeled as the AV pack (which is S-video). AV Pack is cheap and HD is not.

I'm not getting rid of all of my games, just the bulk. I love the system. I just don't need all 300 games in my collection. I plan to keep 20-ish, along with my working console and controllers.

I'd rather pass them on to another set collector or enthusiast. I need the space more than I need the games.
  • I'm looking for POP:WW and 50 Cent platinum hits if you've got 'em.
  • What I'm really looking for is the Halo edition Xbox. If I'm able to find it I'll surely get back into Xbox collecting
  • I like the original Xbox as a gaming platform as well as a collecting platform. The thing that annoys the hell out of me these days is sellers listing Xbox One games in the category of original Xbox. This is happening far too often!

Agreed. I often wonder (but never check) if OG gets miscategorized in 360/one as well...

I run into this issue a ton! It gets kind of annoying, to say the least.

I'll have to look. I might have POP. I don't recall ever finding a copy of 50 Cent platinum, that version of the game is tough to find if I remember right.

  • I finally got my Prince of Persia from ebay.ca   Eyes out for platinum hits 50 Cent and GTA Double Pack now.

  • I just picked up a minty copy of Dukes of Hazard last weekend for $5
  • Man this thread popped up at a perfect time, I was thinking about starting a similar thread. So I have never been an Xbox guy. When it came out I was in the PlayStation court which is strange for me being a huge Sega fan and with all the good stuff they put out on the system, I just never got one for whatever reason. But it was also one of the main reasons I've been saying I wanted to pick one up if I came across one super cheap. I did play it a good amount though due to a lot of friends at the time hopping into the Microsoft camp

Anyway fast forward to this past weekend, went to a Goodwill that I frequent by my buddy's game store in NJ and found a barely touched original xbox for 14.99. Needless to say I had to do it, this was my time. Also always loved Microsoft controllers. I think not being a Halo fan and all of the horror stories of Microsoft consoles dying (360 mostly) kept me away for this long.

Glad to see this thread though since I have started the trek into OG XBOX territory for the first time at the tail end of 2017 haha. I haven't read this thread yet but I am gonna do that now, I just wanted to say my piece! I'm sure there are good recommendations in here but any other insight would be awesome. Really glad I picked it up, the thing is running great and is super clean.
  • Original Xbox was a lot of fun. I loved mine. Wish I had it up in WA with me. And as far as the consoles dying, I got a used 360 several years ago and haven't had any issues with it. I've seen a lot of talk of the red rings and such, but I've personally never had any problems with Xbox consoles.
  • Oh and the games I picked up for cheap at my friends store afterwards:

Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future combo pack

    Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

    Beyond Good & Evil

    Chronicles of Riddick

    Destroy All Humans!
  • I enjoyed playing Resurrection of Evil back when it came out but haven't played it since. I've heard good things about Chronicles of Riddick but I've sadly never played it.

Knock on wood, I haven't had an issue with any of my xbox consoles. Red ring was surely a thing, but I guess I was one of the lucky few that didn't have the issue. Now, I just need to finally pick up the halo edition Xbox, but prices are killing me!

I would open your OG Xboxes up and remove the clock capacitor (and clean up the corrosion) unless they're all 1.6, and none of the Halo ones are. The capacitors are definitely leaking 15 years out, even if they haven't caused problems yet.

Oh wow. I never even thought of this. Thank you for the heads up!

I did this to my launch unit a couple of years ago. It was leaking like a son of a gun and had started to corrode the board. Luckily, my newer revisions are just fine.

  • Oh wow! I really need to look carefully when searching for the Halo edition Xbox. I gotta make sure that the corrosion hasn't hit it!

is there an easy way to tell which revision you have or do you have to open it up to confirm?

Fairly certain that my Halo console is a 1.6, I think both are.

I'm going to have to check the few that I've been watching on Ebay. It seems like the halo editions are indeed 1.6.

This has a lot of info. You might need to crack it open still to confirm, but this will give you a solid idea

    Fantastic! Thanks for the link!

  • I thought all Halo SEs were manufactured before the 1.6 motherboard. What are you guys looking at to determine the version, the actual motherboard or something else? Edit: Well according to that Reddit post they had a run of 1.6 too, cool deal.
  • Yeah, I'm noticing some that were made in early 2004. This will be what I'm looking for.
