Most of the rise has to do with the CME futures, and that dip that Arch alluded to earlier very clearly had to do with the Segwit 2X hard fork cancellation. It was going to take a hit whether there was a hard fork or not of course, but now it's climbing again. It should continue to do so well into December when the futures go live.
It's wild watching the up and downs. It's fun to watch.
Cost per transaction is a lot less from what I understand, like $7-$8, but I haven't looked into it at all. I think we're a LONG way away from seeing it as an everyday alternative, though I don't think it's out of the question.
As for the appeal though, I definitely don’t see it relating to every day purchases. At least not currently.
From what I have gathered, just obtaining Bitcoin has a much higher cost on the order of 2-3% of the value of the bitcoin you're buying, depending on how quickly you want the trade to happen.
There are clearly a lot of middle-man services that are making a lot of money off of this.
I've been out on cryptocurrency since making a few $100 with Dogecoin. It's fun to watch Bitcoin though. It's like a craps table everyone is currently winning at. I still roll my eyes at people who try to push it as the future and a "real currency" and anything but a game or neat black market tool. I'm sure not moving to a currency where transactions take an hour and is a million times more vulnerable to hacking

Why wouldn't you transfer the coins off Coinbase or GDAX as soon as possible? Everyone I talk to that use both always store them in their own wallets with one exception: The lead up to a hard fork.
Fees are low and you have the keys (assuming you take them off the exchange which everyone should).
Again, I think the appeal is still in the decentralization and finite amount of coin, and I don't really have a horse in the race. I just haven't heard of transaction cost being any sort of deterant. The greater fool theory on the other hand, that's wide spread.

When I first heard the term bitcoin years ago, I thought it was referring to Mushroom Kingdom currency...
$7000+ !!!! Wow!!
How much for a bitpenny?
It's at $8,200 now. Absolutely bananas.

I could've had that SE already
Still kicking myself for not buying some when they were $25 a piece...
I could've had that SE already
If I had bought $1000 worth back when I heard about them, I'd have $8MM right now.
