Yeah, I'm already doing this. It's the Sega Saturn. I actually love everything I've learned about it and my affection for it is compounded by the fact that for me, as a kid there was a mystique about it because it was a system I saw for sale, sounded cool and no one I knew had one.
So, I started to heavily collect for it, fast, but soon realized how damn frail these games are, especially if you get into CIB collecting. Pair that with the fact that you could scratch your disc is you play them (and I do collect to play) then I've made the call to sale/trade off most of my games. I'll likely keep some games that are worth $15 or less, but the high end stuff is for trade since I know I'll never play it.
However, my hope is that one hardware hacker will succeed in making hardware hack to play games through the back expansion slot. I like to keep my gameplay as real as possible with real games and hardware, however, considering the issues I outlined above, I think I'll make an exception with the Saturn if that day comes.
I was going for a full n64 set at some point which i never do since i collect games that i play/plan to play. Almost done as id need just crappy sport titles and sculptors cut to complete it But i aborted the plan as i wont play these and i would actually rather sell a bunch of my n64 carts to keep only those that i enjoy. After n64 it would be ps3 games.
I sold nearly all of my N64 collection two months ago for con trip spending money. I hardly used it solo and it never got much interest from my friends when they were at my house for multiplayer games, so it was an easy decision.
Beyond that, if I needed money fast probably my CIB Jaguar or SMS collection. If I needed to reclaim room space, maybe my PS2/XBox/GC/Wii stuff.
Having experience with collection sell-offs I'd sell my items that are easily replaceable if I had the cash to do so, yet still high in value as not to shrink my collection size drastically to reach the amount of money needed.
I've started to slim down everything not Nintendo. Any other system I'm only keeping what I actually play which amounts to 20-30 titles across 4-5 platforms.
I've liquidated pretty much my entire collection down to what I "want" want at this point. Which is to say pretty much just my NES games. So, I don't have anything that can just go without a second thought. If I HAD to sell some stuff off, I would start with the heavy hitter and work my way down. As most people would do, I'm sure.
I would most likely sell my SNES collection first. *Takes cover for incoming rocks and tomatoes*
I never had any as a kid. For all the other systems -> NES, N64, PS1, PS2, XBOX, 360, PS3, PS4, Gameboy, GBA, GBC... I've sold all of those off before.
It's hard to pick because I like "bad" games so even the Sega CD which is laden with fabulously terrible games I want to keep. Actually, maybe its not. I would toss my Intellivision collection in the trash with little hesitation. Lame system, lousy controller, and 50 unplayable, worthless, CIB games. That would free up a decent chunk of room!
If the issue is space and I needed to seriously downsize and for some weird reason I HAD to get rid of collections as a whole instead of simply dumping the chaff I would probably come up with some convoluted poorly thought out formula that takes into account games I like, games I want to play, rarity/difficulty in reacquiring games, price of re-acquisition, cart size, collection size, games I may not necessarily want to play or like but want to keep to show other people, games usable as torture, and other variables I can not think of at the moment, to try and quantify what system(s) I should keep.
Mine would be SNES, but before anyone freaks out, I only have Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Ghouls and Ghosts, Rock and Roll Racing and alttp and three terrible sports games I have no idea where I got. I would chose wii, but I got rid of that already.. The other small collection is PS1, but I would miss Tenchu and Tkken 3 more that any snes game I think
Probably my GBA collection. Although I would probably regret selling doom and doom 2 cause i love the series and they are decent ports compaired to the snes port of doom .
If we're talking sentimental value (and probably in a case where I don't need that much money), then it's probably going to be my small Wii U collection. Never really played that thing.
If I need lots of money though, I might sell my Neo Geo AES set first. It's only 8 games and a console, all boxed, but it's worth a pretty penny
I trimmed my collection early on joining Nintendoage, but I didn't sell of my consoles, I sold off all of my childhood collection of boxes to NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64 games, and then I put together a lot of 64 Nintendo 64 carts and sold those. Slowly but surely I've replaced most of the N64 games. It wasn't nearly as painful to sell it all as I thought it would be, and I was in pretty critical need of the money at the time. They were a nice backbone to help me out of a financial struggle.
I would go with the system of the least attachment at this rate, and despite my cares for it, that would be my SNK stuff. The Neo Geo MVS or the pocket color would have to go first and second in either order or just both as it would sting having the other as a reminder. I have a psone+lcd combo too but less than 10 games so it wouldn't really solve the problem of too much, eating up any real room, or giving too much in value. Not that NGPC eats up much room, but an arcade cabinet and a couple dozen or so arcade boards for it do.
Not really sure though I could part with something else console or handheld after that as it gets into the Gamecube back to the NES history and I've already pared most of it back to original 20th century pick ups. Maybe getting rid of mini arcades, handheld LCD/LED stuff and the like would be the next.
1st to go are the common first party Nintendo games since they generally hold their value but would be easy to replace later. 2nd would be the carts from all my CIB stuff since I wouldn't want to try finding nice boxes/manuals again for most that stuff.

didn't think about that, yeah just sell the carts and keep the boxes and manuals. Carts are way easier to replace

I would probably miss Resident Evil 5 and Zelda Skyward Sword but I think I could live without them

PS2 would be next after that.

I'd probably hold on to most of my MD stuff as well.
