The Wizard Screening Cassette

If you look in the center youll see a copy of The Wizard. Its a promotional movie for Super Mario Bros 3. On the Vhs front cover it says on the top "Includes Promotional Trailer" Then it says under that "The Wizard" "Screeing Cassette" On the bottom it says MCA Universal "Not For Rental or Resale"

On the back it says "Street Date: June 14, 1990." "Videocassette # 80934" "Use is strictly limited to viewing by MCA's customers in connection with the selection and purchase of retail copies of this cassette."

Anyone able to tell me if this is rare?

Also on the VHS its self it says MCA Screener "Wizard" and P.O. #16136

If you want i can take better pictures these are really old

  • Have you posted this elsewhere before, such as on GameSniped? I ask because I've seen a copy before. It's definitely an oddball of an item, and though I'm sure it would go for more than a regular copy, you'll find there's only a small amount of collectors who would have a genuine interest in an item like this. It's one of those items that's worth whatever someone is willing to offer.
  • I'm one of those oddball collectors who would be interested. Let me know if you find a price for it, and I'll pick it up for sure. Thanks image.
  • yeah i did post it on gamesniped but i didnt get many hits so i decided to post it here and its not for sale i just wanted to see if there were any other copies floating around or if anyone saw someone selling one with a price tag on it
  • You can get a regular one for a couple of bucks, if you need a baseline.
  • shipped to rental stores (NOT Hollywood or Blockbuster) back in the day as screener copies. They would come out probably 4-5 months before the actual movie was released on VHS. If people remember, there used to actually be quite a long time before movies came out to video from the theater... in the mean time video stores would send screeners to indie stores to see if they wanted to purchase the particular movie for rental in their store. On any given day you can find a random screener VHS tape at a goodwill or thrift store. I've never seen one of these though and would imagine, it being as unique as it is it should bring anywhere from $10-$20 to the right collector.
  • thanks for all the information
  • Yep Josh is right on... my dad owned 5 video stores and I used to love getting all the screener copies so my friends and I could watch the movies early. The only crappy thing is that they were copy guarded one of two ways. 1) simply by flashing or scrolling words like not for resale if you have purchased this please call yada yada yada. 2) They used to switch out from color to black and white throughout the movie.
  • this doesn't switch out color but it does have the words on the bottom during some scenes in the beginning
