Fs/Fo: Turbografx 16 cd docking station

Well this was a project of mine but I've lost interest in completing it.
All I have is the docking station and power cord.
I was able to test it with someone's setup.

I recently acquired one of these without the power supply. Could I see an up-close picture of that one so I can read the specifications?

    [edit]

Noticed something unrelated. How did you embed a Photobucket image? Did you give in and pay the extortion fee to Photobucket? I wouldn't trust the current owners with a credit card number and I wouldn't encourage them. Switched to IMGUR a long time ago because Photobucket is basically unusable, even when an ad blocker is used. The current owners don't want to fix it, they just want to extort money from all the people who had already used it to embed images for many years.

Just use a regulated 12v universal power supply with a 5.5x2.5mm tip that has central negative polarity.

EDIT: And at least 1.5A current potential.

    Good luck.

Radio Shack (before they became cell phone shack) used to carry an exact replacement for it, but I don't think another one exists.

  • I can confirm this one works, I've used it on a TG Dock before:

[Negative Polarity] SoulBay Universal AC/DC Adapter Switching Replacement Power Supply with Six Adaptor Plugs for Household Electronics Tip Negative Effects Pedals Keyboards - 2000mA Max https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01934GY58/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_b9RmAb3TJY35Q

Those universal ones will technically work but I wouldn't want to use them long term as the voltage/amerperage aren't identical. Go with this one https://en.retrogamesupply.com/products/power-supply-for-nec-turbografx-16-cd-rom-dock
  • The amperage does not need to be identical, can can be rated for higher. The device only draws a certain amount of current and the rated amperage is the maximum it can provide.

As for the voltage, these older power supplies supply unregulated power which means the TG Dock PSU actually outputs higher voltage than the rated 11V. Regulated 12V from the universal power supply might actually be better because it is always outputting 12V, whether the power supply is under a load or not.
  • Why 12v? You only need 7v on a 7805 to get the 5v required for the console. Go with a 9-10v and save the heat and wasted electricity.

Some extra juice was probably needed when you add the dock and the CD drive. The TG16 original adapter was rated "10.5v" and they included a physically bigger one with the Turbo CD + dock (people are telling me "11v"). I'm guessing both devices (console and dock) have their own regulators inside. Maybe the CD drive too...?

  • The dock has it's own regulators and it feeds through the voltage in ports which should bypass the console regulators. I have used a 9v and a 10v on mine for some time without issues, with both a cd-rom2 and tg16 hooked up. But hey who knows.

I could probably get by with my original 10.5v then. I don't know why the CD setup came with a physically bigger power supply. The hard plastic carrying case has a spot for the power supply and it's a bit too large for my 10.5v TG16 brick.

Sorry for thread derail. Lots of free bumps, OP

  • Honestly couldn't say, but that thing is huge. I have seen it hit 18v as well when in use.
