NES - Toaster???

Hello and welcome to me! I am new, therefore I am new! image

My first question to you is......  Why is the original NES console nicknamed the "toaster style" NES? to me it looks the LEAST like a toaster of any console of it's day. Have you ever seen a front loading toaster?

Well I'm guessing there may be a logical answer, so I look forward to hearing it image

Cheers!

  • because if you were to stand it on it's back, the cartridge slides in and out like a piece of toast would come out an old toaster. I think it actually be slightly more appropriate to call it a VCR NES but that may cause some confusion.
  • I still don't get it. Toaster's don't have a flap over, and all other upright "flapless" consoles are surely more toasteresque?
  • I always thought it was because you depress the game to lock it in so you can play, in the same way you push down a peice of bread to lock it into a toaster before it turns on. You know, spring loaded similarities or whatever.
  • Speaking of, anyone ever see that actual toaster that was modded into an NES?
  • Ah I think I get it. So once you've slid the game into the slot, it's the action of pushing it down. Still a bit of a stretch of the imagination but I'll go with it lol
  • I kinda agree with you Gary. However this started was kinda strange to me. It is what it is I guess...
  • Yeah, I've always thought it's a bit of a stretch, too. My NES most certainly does NOT make toast.
  • The toploader would be more like a toaster if it were in the loading

It's gotta be that it's spring-loaded. When the game's toast, it pops right up image

That is the best idea I have ever heard. Maybe today while I am out searching for games, I will be up an old toaster and build it into an NES. Should not be that hard...
