Game Cube Battery

Does anybody know why the game cube has an external battery? I found one that works and holds a charge for 1.99 at the good will. The only thing I could think of if the the extra screen that the GC had.
How long would the charge last with the screen attachment?

    no idea, but i had some for sale a while back and ended up just giving one away... i still think i have the other one.
