Will a PAL copy of Legend of Zelda run correctly on an NTSC NES?

Hi folks,

I'm just wondering if there were any modifications or patches etc. made to PAL editions of Zelda that would cause it to run incorrectly on an NTSC NES, as I'm aware some games  work 'properly' when played on a US console, whereas others had adjustments to music etc that make it work incorrectly.

I'd like to buy it, and being in the UK it would be much cheaper if I could just get a PAL copy.

Thanks.

  • You'd need to disable the lockout chip in the system (either directly or using something in between the cart and the system to disable the check--the Blinking Light Win does this, for example), but otherwise it should work just fine. I don't know about Zelda specifically, but some PAL games optimized to run on PAL hardware can end up running at a different speed on US hardware (usually faster than they're meant to due to the 50/60 Hz difference), so it's possible that it'll play slightly differently, but so long as the lockout chip is taken care of, it should boot up and run.
  • Thanks, should have mentioned I have done the lockout chips mod and thankfully all is working as it should (I have a copy of SMB3 which music runs way too fast). Hopefully someone might have an idea if Zelda has any changes, or if it does they're minimal enough that it won't matter.
  • The music will be sped up slightly, but not as bad as some games.

  • Ah I see thanks for that, I might have to try and import a copy.
  • The other way around (NTSC on a PAL console) makes the title music sound like a funeral dirge.
  • Might be an idea to buy an everdrive, if all you want to do is play the game. That way you could load up the NTSC rom of any game you wanted to play, no problem. If you bought one off EBay in the UK, it would probably average out to a similar price to importing a copy of Zelda from the US! Just a thought!
  • I think I will buy an Everdrive . There are a few games I want legitimate copies of, within reason. Zelda is probably the only game left on my list now I want really for the NES, anything else is just a bonus. For some games, getting a legitimate copy is just massively unreasonable (I'm looking at you Chronotrigger).
