N64 Boxes

I recently picked up Super Smash Bros. for the N64 with a box.  Every N64 box I have ever seen had a white insert to hold the game.  The box I got with SSB doesn't have this insert, it is just an empty rectangular prism.  I don't see anywhere that it was removed, so did some games not have this insert or is my box possibly a repro?

Comments

  • The white inside is usually removable, like the NES/SNES. So probably just... lost, gone, poof, not included.

  • Ah, I didn't think there was a tray, I just remember the little "pocket" insert.

    Thanks!
  • No problem! I know with Gameboy it was a mix of having trays, and having glued-in slots (my Pokemon Blue has such a slot, for instance), so I'm not sure if it varies from game to game on N64 (I don't collect CIB for N64 personally).
  • Some of my N64 games did not have a white removable tray.
  • Some N64 games have the tray like Gloves mentioned, but personally I have never seen a Smash box with the removable tray.

Me either. Bought mine at launch and the trays are generally older. I’ll check just to be sure I’m remembering correctly.

Without the internal compartments it could be a retail display box or a counterfeit.

The oldest GB games had plastic inserts, then paper, then the single-sheet design with glue.

Smash Bros did not have the "tray", it had the built in cardboard "slot" inside for the game. If you would like pics please feel free to PM me.

I don't know if it is a repro, but it isn't the normal box. The white four on the blue tab isn't something I have seen before and there should be a "U" on the blue tab before the NUS

Looks legit in terms of just how a box looks. But no tray, different code? It’s weird and could just be an uncommon variant but really the trend is the earlier releases had the tray

There isn't a single one for sale on Ebay with a "tray" except one repro...they all have the built in cardboard

That’s fair and I haven’t seen one before either... so is OP’s box a repro? Sure doesn’t look like it

  • FWIW, the game is a "Player's Choice" version but the box doesn't say that. Bought them together at a thrift store. Not sure if this helps at all.

I would shine a light into the box and see if there are any tears on the inside where the cardboard may have been removed. If not then I would say it is a fake...

  • The box is legit, most people are not aware, but I have seen a few variants like this for Super Smash Bros.

This is the Super Smash Bros box with the white tray instead of built-in insert.

There is a variant for Mario Party 3 just like that and a few other games if I remember correctly.

There is also a variant for San Francisco Rush that has the built-in insert instead of the white tray (reversed variant basically from the above games).

My hero.  The person spawning my insert obsession. LOL.
