It certainly could be a possibility, I am not an expert on the ds. How can I determine if this is the case?
If it is a case, you should be able to pop it out. When you open it up (like picture 2), there are little tabs holding the ds in. If you jently bend the case so that the tabs let go, the ds should come out. You my damage the case, so you may want to figure out a price for it before you pop it out. If it is some ultra valuable case, it may be better to leave it in there.

Well mystery solved, it is just a case, sadly enough.
Anyone have any ideas on the case value? I'm guessing probably little, but still...
