eBay problem resolved!

Sold a bundle on eBay.  Shipped the item to the Paypal address they have on file.  Paypal shipping, printed off computer, no handwriting errors.  Package gets there and then states the above, "unable to deliver item, problem with address".  It appears the item may be coming back to me due to the latest updates on tracking.

What next?  I messaged the seller two days ago about it to get an updated address and have had no response back yet.

Thoughts?

Edited and updated due to finding out the buyer is also a member here and the fact that the item was delivered today.

  • Are you 100% sure the item is coming back? I've seen something similar on a few items I've sold, but also some that I've bought. It says there is a problem, but in reality the items were delivered fine, and the problem is within eBays system ( shocker ). What's USPS have to say about the tracking number?
  • Any snow in the area? I had a 2 day Amazon prime package take 6 days to get here with "problem with address" errors due to weather.
  • You may have to call ebay and discuss the situation since as we all know they are pro buyer, when it comes to the crappy buyer being an idiot about their address info I always call and argue with ebay reps and for the most part they will tell you that you have to refund the buyer but you can withhold the shipping amount it cost you the first time since it is no fault of yours at all. What you don't want to do is open a case and then "ask ebay to step in/make a decision" because you will more then likely lose the case-have to return all of the money and the final kick when your down you will receive a defect for asking for their help. I just had a similar situation with a controller shipped to Norway. The shipping amount was more then the controller was even worth but it was a new ebay member and they had the wrong address on file with PP. Hope this information helps, I am sure other members here can chime in with similar experiences.
  • I've had this happen before during spring or summer. The buyer moved and forgot to change address or relied on the package being forwarded to their new address (which it did not).

I ended up somehow re-listing the item using the go-to protocol (eBay's seller forums) at an ungodly buy-it-now price to scare away people. I enabled best offer (which we had an agreement beforehand the amount; price it originally sold for). The original transaction aka listing was mutually cancelled (Final Value Fee credited back to my account), item re-sold to the buyer under a new listing, and re-shipped to their new address and the buyer was happy. No problems whatsoever after that.

Here's the eBay conversation for reference:

    Seller (me)

Just letting you know that I unexpectedly received this parcel back in the mail today from USPS. Based on USPS tracking events, it appears there was a problem with the shipping address having been incorrect as the shipping label is completely in-tact, legible, weighted, and dated correctly (see attached photos). It is also possible that USPS totally goofed up.

If the address is correct and you still want the item, I will cover the cost of shipping and re-mail Wednesday July 8, 2015. If the shipping address is incorrect and still want the item, first correct the shipping address in both eBay and Paypal, notify me of the change, I will purchase a new shipping label with updated address, and re-mail. I will split the cost of shipping with you. You pay $1.64 and I will pay $1.63.

Otherwise, the last option would be to mutually cancel this transaction for a refund minus the cost of original shipping.

    Buyer

I moved in May and had not updated my EBay/PayPal address. I believed that my USPS forwarding service was still in effect, but it seems I was wrong. My current address is:

    blah blah blah

    blah blah blah

If you are still okay with re shipping it I can send you the $1.64 through PayPal.

  • Been checking the status all weekend. Last night it was delivered back to their regional hub. I assume it will be coming back to me. Today I check the status and it was delivered this morning to the correct address. The buyer also messaged me and said it was in the next town over (which on google maps also has the exact same street address as the next town over. I think they are interconnected cities hence the problem.

In the end buyer got package and we are both happy. Thanks for the advice everyone!
