Figured out what causing buzz/hum from Famicom.

Recently purchased old square button non working famicom on ebay (along with many others) & it was totally dead. I fixed it by replacing the 7805 voltage regulator & took the controllers apart and clean them really good and they work good as new now. Only problem (other than jailbars of course but not big issue for me since it's 1984 & RF so I can't expect perfect picture) is a annoying buzzing or humming noise from tv speakers. Even without controller 2 plugged in to motherboard it still done it. I could live with it but I noticed when I moved the power switch it would change. So by accident I was testing out a game I got and flipped switch on and the buzz was gone but when I set switch down it started back. I then slid switch over and pressed and noticed I could get it to go away. So turns out the switch is causing it which surprised me. I'm going to take switch apart and clean it good hopefully I can keep original switch. I've read so many having the same issue and I thought it was possibly just from using channel 96 and interference at first but now happy to report it was something so simple. I hope this helps others who have famicom buzzing. I've read others who AV modded and still have the buzz so that to me ruled out the RF crap causing it. Glad I did not AV mod I prefer to keep these original really because it's not like composite eliminates the jailbars anyways not to mention cobbling up the inside of the system.

  • Very interesting. Reminds me of the Colecovision and video issues introduced due to the power switch having poor contact.
