You don't need to look any further than Chicago to see some ugly murder stats.

Yeah, it's nasty down there. They had more murders than NYC/LA combined last year.

    1. Sanctuary cities.

The media doesn't exist to tell us what we already know, it exists to inform us on what we don't know. We've already reached a maximum level of "terrorism awareness" in the US and there's nothing that the common citizen can do about it anyway.

    2. I think it's fine to discuss these kinds of things, but I just think it's sad to see people to get so livid and outraged over something so minor when something so major just happened. Maybe the OP is right and people aren't so great after all.

    1. Irrelevant. The murders aren't caused by terrorism, and they're a "solvable" problem that we aren't worried about (usually in lieu of terrorism).

    2. Based on the effort involved, I can't say with a straight face that people are overly outraged on this issue. It doesn't take a lot of effort to Tweet. Now, if people were protesting in the streets, sure I'd agree with you.

This issue will be out of the news within 2 days anyway, why worry about it?

Obama even stated 'no terrorist attacks have happened on US soil in the past 8 years'.

But there was Ohio State U, the mall stabbing in Minnesota, San Bernardino, Colorado Theater, Little Rock Arkansas, Ft Hood, bombings in NYC & NJ. There was the Miami and Orlando nightclub shootings. There was the Boston Marathon bombing. Those are just the bigger ones. There have been so many more, but people's memory spans seem short.

You can usually tell when a radical Islamic terrorist or Illegal Immigrant is to blame when they refer to the shooter as "Shooter" or "Male" and then bleach white the skin color of the perp in the photos. Happens a hell of a lot.

It's all about relabeling to play with statistics to sway public opinion.

I did keep that in mind, but my point still stands. The death toll from these attacks is trivial at best. It's a problem we need to work on, but it's not the biggest issue pressing us right now.

Also, Aurora was not a terrorist attack.

In addition, the mall attack in STC wasn't the worst thing to happen in that town that year by a longshot. It probably didn't even crack the top 10.

  • United Airlines Stock Drops $1.4 Billion After Passenger-Removal Controversy

Sure, they may recover much of that over time. However, I hope this is a serious wake-up call to airlines and other corporations in general. To these corporations all that really matters is $$$, and just one incident has cost UA over $1 billion.

"The Utah teen who authorities say was shot in the back of the head, robbed and left for dead in a dry canal bed two months ago - allegedly at the hands of two older boys - has been released from the hospital."

"David Perry, the attorney representing the suspected teen shooter, tells PEOPLE the case is "very perplexing."... "On a scale of one to 10, 10 being the most empathetic, he scores a ten," he continues of his client. "He is so remorseful. It was totally out-of-character for these two boys."

Yeah... "totally out-of-character". I mean, for someone else sure, maybe they would shoot a little girl in the back of the head and rob her, but NO. Not for this boy, he's really a good boy. We should try and be empathetic, after all it was just a one-time shot in the back of the head, robbery, and covering up the murder. Come on, it won't happen again, right? [end bitter sarcasm]
  • We all know horrible things happen, but every now and then a news story is just particularly horrific, and this is one.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-veteran-charged-killing-ptsd-215208661.html

"US veteran charged with killing PTSD 'therapy dog' as boyfriend filmed her"

"Rollins, dressed in camouflage trousers and a pink bra, stalks the dog, shooting the canine in the head whilst laughing and giggling at the dying animal, it is alleged."

First off, it's not "alleged", it's filmed! Secondly, I think some people are beyond help. I know that PTSD can do a lot to a person, and sometimes people can snap and do violent things. However, this is clearly premeditated murder. She was giggling... while shotting a helpless animal in the head!! Honestly, I wouldn't bat an eyelash if they were both hung.

"He said Desper, on the Route 100 bypass at the same time as Roberson, "jockeyed for position and wasn't happy. So he pulled out a gun and shot Bianca in the head."

So let's see, now we spend some $15 million for the trial. Then he's found guilty. Then he's in jail for years... and let's face it. Someone who shoots someone else simply because they were upset about merging on the highway, there is no way in hell they will ever be a functioning member of society.
  • I prefer to spend more time alone in thought and meditation so as to write down what I've learned and share it. Can't spend too much time out unless it contributes to whatever I do when I go back to my private business.

That being said, despite our household having three dogs, I am thinking of getting a new hamster (the one I had as a kid was one of my favorite pets) and maybe a rhinocerous beetle.

This just boils my blood! yeah, I wasn't there, I don't know exactly what happened... but I have eyes, there's a video, and I think it's clear that this "policeman", and I use the term loosely, is guilty of manslaughter in the least! Most probably murder. There are laws against shooting unarmed civilians in war, but for the police to shoot a guy begging not to be shot? What did the "policeman" think?? That the guy crying on the ground was going to whip out an AK-47?? This is bullshit! Although, I think he told the truth when he said he was doing what he was trained to do. Also, perhaps he had a good lawyer.

    https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/mesa-breaking/2017/12/07/philip-brailsford-verdict-daniel-shaver-killing/927052001/

There were apparently 6 police officers. Guess 6 police is not enough to take down a sobbing man on the ground without shooting him? BS. Oh, and get this: The judge did not allow jurors to hear about an etching on the dust cover of the rifle Brailsford used to shoot Shaver, which said "You're f--ked," because he felt it was prejudicial.

You can add my so-called "father" to that list...he was a big bully to me in general but he was also sometimes mean to his animals, and I did witness him (way back when I was still a child) kick a cat in anger off our porch and it flew into the air like a football.    Cats are the nicest, kindest, gentelist (unless you're a bird or mouse I guess) and very bestest of all of God's creatures, how could people do such things?    All kitties want is to be cuddled and loved

When I went to UK (1999-2003) we had the then brand new William T Young Library open just a few years prior and the interior was very "open ended"...which meant that when someone's phone would go off, everyone inside could hear it!  Shoot one of the local on campus churches there at the time had to remind everyone before each service to turn off their phones.  Why such a reminder is even neccesary in a house of worship of any kind is beyond me.  And that was back 15-20 years ago...and people weren't nearly as "glued" to their phones then as they are now...so I can only imagine what it must be like now.

PS: Would you believe that since I left UK, among the other changes since then (like the shiny new Student Center coming up) they took away all the landlines in the dorms??  Yep, it's totally BYOP (bring your own (cell/smart) phone) now.
