Crt color bleed

I've got some pretty distracting color bleeding going on with my trinitron. Can't seems to find anything in the service menu that helps. Can this be easily fixed or are components just failing?

  • Any way you can take some photos?
  • Take? Yes. Upload? Unfortunately not. But I will keep trying

Got some to upload. It's mostly prevalent around text and text boxes but is definitely visible other times as well.
  • It's call convergence and it's super fun. Check the service manual for your set which will show you pictures of how to adjust it and what should be adjusted before convergence, but there are lots of Youtube videos for old TVs and arcade monitors on convergence. You'll have to open the set up and adjust it while it's on (a mirror is very helpful). Mark the position of your convergence rings before messing with them so you can bring it back to how it was after you screw with it and make it worse.

It's easier to do if you have a white grid displayed on the TV. Check out 240p Test Suite, which will run on flash carts or burned CDs. I think some of the old Capcom/Marvel fighting games have a test grid you can use too.
  • Yes it's a convergence problem, I would advice you to be really careful not to touch anything else but the convergence rings if you are going to adjust it yourself, best of luck, this problem can be a bit tricky and you probably won't be able to adjust it perfectly so just adjust it until it looks good enough.
  • Definitely not what I wanted to hear but I appreciate the input

Seems like a straight forward enough process but my rings don't move
  • Sometimes the rings are glued together, try to get them loose but be careful not to break them, maybe an xacto knife could be of use. Got any pics?

    *sigh* too late
  • Seriously?

Maybe it can be glued back? Also you can probably get the rings from another crt, find a crt in the trash and get the rings, I have an arcade monitor that had no rings and I was able to fit a new set of rings.

OK. It's only one of the nubs that's broke, not the entire ring. I can still move it with a little more effort. But I can see that there's no way I'm going to get anywhere without a test pattern so I'm going have to figure out how to get one
  • Do you own any flash cart or a CD console that can run backups? The 240p test suite is available for a ton of different consoles. If not you can see if your tv has test patterns in the service menu, a Samsung CRT I have has some patterns built in the service menu, google how to get to the service menu of your trinitron and see if it has any.

I will try the service menu again. Otherwise the only console I could use would be the Dreamcast
  • The service menu is not the standard menu, it is hidden and to access it you have to enter a specific sequence, try these:

    https://factory-reset.com/wiki/Sony_Service_Menu

There's a dreamcast version of the 240p test suite so if that fails you can use that if you cannot get anything useful from the service menu:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/testsuite240p/files/Dreamcast/

Nothing in the service menu. I also don't have a way to get the rom onto a disc anyway
  • Do you have access to a CD-R/DVD-R burner? I've read about DVDs with test patterns but you'd need to burn it yourself as well, anyways you could give it a go without a pattern, just mark where it was before moving anything so if it gets worse you can turn it back to were it was, or leave it for now until you have the means to display the patterns.

I've been messing with it for a while and while it's not perfect, it's definitely better than before. Next time I will have better means to do it though
  • Way to go! Glad you're safe too. Finding a technician that works on CRTs is difficult nowadays, so it's good to learn to do this kind of stuff ourselves.

    Definitely. Thanks for your help.
  • You're welcome, bad convergence it's a very irritating issue lol
