eBay item shipped via USPS damaged

Shipped an item in a large flat rate box that got smashed. Value was high enough that I insured it when shipping through the eBay shipping service. I know there are many eBay veterans on this site. What is the next step to file a claim?

  • you need to go to usps site and file a claim online. if its insured you should get your value back. if its not you will get 50 dollars. the claim will take 3 days to approve.
  • Was it game related?
  • I believe that if your the shipper, the person who receives it is the one who has to file the claim.
  • Very interested in this OP, wish you the best. Since I've acclimated to the hobby, I feel like I've always heard the USPS insurance is like pulling teeth from a tiger to get paid - but I truly hope not. Can you keep us posted?

Unfortunately not the case. With ebay at least. The seller is responsible for making sure the item gets their safe, and in the case of a claim that falls on the seller to spearhead.

USPS is a pain in the ass but you can put the claim in online. I hope it goes in your favor and you get your money back.
  • I've never filed an insurance claim with USPS before, but my experience with UPS claims (3 total, all as the receiver) is that they have denied every single insurance claim I've put in. Every time I've been told that they don't pay out on insurance if the sender didn't pack it properly, and basically, if a package is damaged, that means the sender didn't pack it properly. As far as UPS is concerned, I'm not really sure what insurance is for other than a lost package........ maybe.
  • I too wish you the best. I actually was listing a lot of custom painted nintendo consoles on ebay a few years ago doing quite well with them but these days I'm afraid to since it's such a gamble all the way around particularly with damage. I'd always wrap them really good in a box larger than needed with plenty of bubble wrap and such but sometimes when box gets used as a step or something that's not enough. I had a friend who sold an item on there a while back that was fairly expensive & he had insurance & I don't know exact outcome but I know buyer left him a negative feedback even though he was at no fault so apparently USPS wasn't of much help. Good luck I know it's very frustrating trying to make an honest buck these days.
