Nes games that you have given up on

This is not focused on about how difficult, frustrating or tuff a game can be that causes you to put it aside.

Name the games that caused you either it put them aside for a while or just give up on for any particular reason. I know there isn't good excuse for giving up but everyone reaches it at some point. I find that repetition can be more of the cause than difficulty but it's just hard to recognize it sometimes. Some games I've put aside would be Ninja Gaiden, and Golgo 13. Never felt compelled enough to go back to beat them or continue them. Maybe it's the lack of level codes or just cause I haven't been in the mood.  Can't say I've given up on any nes games that I put aside because I just wasn't as dedicated to beating them.

List away!

    Ghost N Goblins...argh

  • FFII (repo)- i'm 3/4 done and exhausted. anyone finish the FFII or III games?
  • TMNT - that stupid tecnodrome gets me every time

MTPO - still haven't beaten Mike image

every Ninja Gaiden - can almost beat every one of them

Dragon Warrior 2 - dumb, collecting medallions that you can't see?

all three Final Fantasies on the NES - just can't get into them like DW or Tower of Radia

Crystalis - just got bored near the end

... probably forgetting a few others
  • mario all stars lost levels....I quit for YEARS!!!! And picked it back up this week and got to 8-4 and now I'm stuck. I hated the game because I would warp and it would always take me backwards so I just went completely through the game.
  • same problem for me. i though the lost levels would be easy. i cannot beat it either. i will try again. you have motivated me.
  • I was just playing adventure island i don't think I have ever died so many times in a game before, I made it to level 7-4 until I finally said F this and turned it off. The other is TMNT 1 I made it into the Technodrome once since the game was first released. how many years ago was that now. :S
  • "magmax", does that game ever end?

I actually just beat it...or at least 8-4...I didn't know there were more worlds after that. I beat World 9 and the World A and now I am at B-3.
  • Marble Madness, at least for a while.
  • Zoda's Revenge. Not because it's hard, just because it's stupid. I stopped playing the minute Cleopatra told me I had to get her some pizza.

Well, not really... but I stopped paying attention to the storyline at that point. It's still a kickass game.

As for games that are stupidly hard, I'll say TMNT too. Fucking Technodrome!

I'm pretty positive that Magmax is just on a continuous loop.

As far as games I've turned my back to go:

Golgo 13: Made it to the final boss several times and blew all my lives. I just can't seem to figure out how to hurt him.
Athena: Something about this game just pissed me off to no end. Seems each time I played it, I'd get madder at it. So I moved on to something else.

I would like to go back and finish them both at some point, but we'll see when that happens.

  • Ghost n Goblins is very beatable with some practice and dedication, I have very little trouble running through the first quest at this point. it's all patterns...

Games that I can close to beating and have given up on:

Battletoads (yep, came close a million times but never beat it)

Dino Riki (last level just got to me)

Rush N Attack (only really played it once, made it to the last boss and lost)

Ninja Kid (does this game end?)

Kick Master (super fun, but never completed it)

A few others that I'm sure I'll think of soon.

I managed to beat TMNT when I was a kid. The hard part is inside the blasted Tecnodrome. All the enemies in their are much stronger and take a lot of hits to kill.

    Mine would be:

    Battletoads (The 3rd stage).

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Bald Bull 2nd time around or The Sandman get me everytime.)

Double Dragon (God blasted Machine Gun Willie)

  • I was playing Ninja Gadien last weekend and I got so pissed, I almost twisted a controller in half. I died at one point for like an hour.
  • Wow MRN I'm just glad to hear you actually had a little time to get some gaming in! That in itself is a WIN for you buddy!
  • Battletoad's! That game is seriously impossible. I can't even beat it with cheat codes!

3 is pretty easy, but really lacks soul.  2 is terrible, though.  The leveling system is so poorly thought out.  They had a neat idea, but completely missed the mark in the implementation.
  • wow,am i the only one that can beat tmnt 1 no problem? lol ,it the 2nd & 3rd ones i cant beat,i suck at those!

Ok, I now officially hate that game!  I can't tell you how many hours of my life i've wasted trying to reach a final boss.  image
  • Yeah, I'm definitely gonna say Battletoads. I can't even beat it using the Game Genie!

Haha, I think most people are the total opposite.  2 and 3 are very beatable, but there are oodles of annoying spots in the 1st one that just make you need to quit.
  • Mine definitely have to be Ghosts n' Goblins and Adventure Island. It doesn't seem like Adventure Island should be insanely difficult, but man, for the life of me I cannot beat it. Ghosts n' Goblins on the other hand....yeah....it's Ghosts n' freaking Goblins.

  • Ghosts and Goblins is murder. I have it on the capcom classics (ps2). I can barely get past the first few levels. Any super ghouls and ghosts fans? I like that the most. I think it has the best music and gameplay of the series. With practice, I can get up to stage 4 pretty quickly. One of my mini goals in that game is to get up to the green or gold suit. If I only have the silver suit, I'll start over, lol. The green suit on the river raft (2nd level) is pretty cool. But havent beaten any of them, that would take some dedication.
  • I haven't given up on any NES game, but I have put Battletoads to the side...for now.   lol image
  • @JB2134: I'm a huge Super G&G fan! I think the music is absolutely stellar. (especially the raft level).

Snake's Revenge - I've given up countless times. And right at the end near the final boss fight!

Kick Master - Great game, just can't get around to beating the damn cart.
  • Adventures Islands get boring very easily. I still hate NARC with a passion, I agree with TMNT the Technodrome is one hard mo'fo.
  • I haven't really given up on any games, but do have a pretty massive backlog of games in progress for one reason or another, either being too hard at the time I'd last played them, or I dropped it to play something else and simply never got back to it, or didn't enjoy the game enough to keep playing, or in the case of some I didn't like the game at all so it wasn't in my best interest to play it more, or maybe I just simply haven't gotten around to putting any real effort into it, oh, or the game just can't be beaten as it has no end, whatever the reason, its all here.

    NES games NOT beaten

    1943
    Furthest Progress:
    Stage 15
    04/13/05
Stage 15, Ryofu, no matter how I've powered up my plane, my skills just aren't up to beating this frickin' stage!

    3-D World Runner
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 3 I think, I forget, anyway it wasn't very far.

    AD&D Dragon Strike
    Furthest Progress:
I got as far as the Icewall Fortress, just haven't gotten back to the game in a long while to progress further.

    Adventure Island
    Furthest Progress:
Don't remember exactly, no more than a few worlds.

    Adventure Island 2
    Furthest Progress:
    5th island, "Cave Island"

    Adventure Island 3
    Furthest Progress:
    6th world, "Ice Island"

    Alpha Mission
    Furthest Progress:
A few stages, didn't keep record of it.

    Athena
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 2, if only the jump height wasn't so random this'd be a rather fun and more playable game.
    8/30/08
    stage 1 - first boss

    Balloon Fight

    Barker Bill's Trick Shooting

    Battle Tank
    Furthest Progress:
Mission 5, goal is to destroy 2 power plants, destroy enemy forces, map to location of enemy refinery, and then destroy refinery - I was the one that got destroyed though.

    Battletoads
Furthest Progress (no warps, no extra lives code):
Stage 9, "Terra Tubes", even with a 1up loop or two here I still couldn't pass it. Volkmire's Inferno, and Intruder Excluder are what really killed my chances though, losing quite a bit of lives on each of those stages. Strangely, while most gamers loath the speeder bike stage, many never being able to pass it, this is my favorite stage in the whole game.
    05/23/08
1st try (used warps-stage 3 to stage 5, and stage 6 to stage 8): 1st continue in Surf City, score 346.400, game over in Elevator Shaft, score 19.500

    Beetle Juice
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 2, I don't like this game, but the music is catchy and once in a while, like many games, I find myself humming a tune from this game.

    Boulder Dash
    Furthest Progress:
World 6, "Volcano World", I didn't enjoy this game enough to continue trying, character moves way too fast.

    Bump 'N Jump

    Furthest Progress:
Floor 4, or something like that, what does it matter, still had a very long ways to go.

    Destination Earthstar
    Furthest Progress:
Got through a couple of stages, don't remember how far (2nd, 3rd planet?), but had great difficulty with the horizontal scrolling areas due to crappy control and bad firing rate.

Dig Dug 2: Trouble in Paradise
    05/10/07
    1st try: score 28.300, Round 6
    2nd try: score 84.400, Round 10
    3rd try: score 53.400, Round 8
    4th try: score 44.100, Round 7

    Furthest Progress:
Just a few stages and it was already quite difficult.

23rd game: Score 54.300, Level 8, speed high

    Dragon Power
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 9, "The Jungle". Played this during one of the ol' Gamefaqs NES Board game challenges several years ago, along with other tough games such as Battletoads, and Cobra Triangle. As with those two, I put up a hell of a struggle, but failed to beat it. Though having plenty of tries available, after a while being sent back to the beginning of stage 7 everytime you die in any stage thereafter gets to be a pain.

    Dungeon Magic
    Furthest Progress:
Couldn't really figure out what to do or where to go in this game, but also couldn't really get into it, a bit too complex to readily get into.

    Elevator Action
    05/15/07
    1st try: score 17.150, 3rd building
    2nd try: score 16.350, 3rd building
    3rd try: score 16.350, 3rd building
    4th try: score 15.050, 2nd building
    5th try: score 17.400, 3rd building

    Excite Bike
    Furthest Progress:
This game isn't even fun, I pick it up once every few years, play for a few minutes, turn it off.

Exodus: Journey to the Promised Land

    Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll
    Furthest Progress:
    Beat the 1st quest

    Freedom Force
    Furthest Progress:
    Last stage

    Gauntlet
    Furthest Progress:
Made it to room 79 with the Valkyrie.

    Gauntlet II
    Furthest Progress:
Just a dozen or so stages, I don't really bother with this game ever since finding out years ago that it didn't end, so unless there's a reason to play for high score only, I don't see me really playing this game much at all.

    George Foreman's KO Boxing
    Furthest Progress:
Got to "Irish" Tommy Morton on the second world circuit.

    Ghostbusters 2
    Furthest Progress:
Got to the last stage once, I call it a fluke, because I'm lucky to even make it even to the halfway point of the Statue of Liberty stage. I usually have a game over on the 2nd driving stage.

    Gotcha! The Sport!
    Furthest Progress:
This game is very easy, played I think well over a dozen stages before turning the game off to play something else, its fun, but only for very brief sessions.

    Gyruss
    Furthest Progress:
    Venus-stage 30
    08/23/08
    1st try: Venus-stage 30, score 457.200
    08/25/08
    2nd try: Jupiter-stage 19 (boss), score 335.500
    3rd try: Earth-stage 27 (boss), score 492.300
    08/26/08
    4th try: Earth-stage 22, score 422.600
    5th try: Jupiter-stage 19 (boss), score 316.750

    Hogan's Alley

    Home Alone 2
    Furthest Progress:
    Kevin's Uncle's House
    05/25/08
1st try: park area just beyond sewer
    2nd try: Kevin's Uncle's House-Harry & Marv

    Hunt for Red October
    Furthest Progress:
Got to the stage where you use Captain Ramius, having to disarm bombs aboard the sub, obviously I failed to do it.
    08/26/08
1st try: stage 2 Arctic Zone
2nd try: stage 2 Arctic Zone (boss)
3rd try: stage 2 Arctic Zone (boss), score 28.440
4th try: stage 4 Deep Sea Trench (boss), score 89.650
5th try: stage 4 Deep Sea Trench, score 92.060
6th try: stage 4 Deep Sea Trench (boss), score 106.255
7th try: stage 4 Deep Sea Trench (boss), score 133.175
    08/27/08
8th try: stage 6 Tropics (boss), score 189.790
9th try: stage 5 Crystal Zone, score 139.265
10th try: stage 5 Crystal Zone, score 147.990

    Ice Climber
    Furthest Progress:
    Mountain 9
    12/13/07
    1st try: Mountain 5, score 24.080
    2nd try: Mountain 8, score 68.870
    3rd try: Mountain 7, score 20.060
    4th try: Mountain 7, score 27.740
    5th try: Mountain 9, score 85.760

    Ikari Warriors
    Furthest Progress:
Progress? Without codes I can't ever see me passing even the first very long, very slow, very annoying stage. I wonder, if they were pit against each other in a foot race, who'd win, Paul (or Vince), or Dr. Jekyll?

    Ikari Warriors 2
    Furthest Progress:
Much easier than the first game, I think I got to stage 2 or 3 without codes, at least the characters are faster and can strafe in this one.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    Furthest Progress:
Wasn't sure at first of what I was supposed to be doing exactly, took me a long time to figure out how to even change weapons, but it seems interesting enough. Has seemingly infinite continues, played it for well over an hour, was on level 5, or was it 6, forgot already. Guess you have to rescue every child and find every piece of map(?) in each stage to advance, so it seems. Someday I'm going to tackle this one really seriously, it was kinda fun.

    Iron Tank
    Furthest Progress:
Quite far, a few stages short of the end, problem was that the password only saves the last checkpoint you were at, not any extra power-ups earned up to that point.
    05/25/08
    Power Plant, score 194.900

Kid Kool and the Quest for the 7 Wonder Herbs
    Furthest Progress:
Got to stage 7-3 once, though I still had a lot of lives, I eventually just gave up, due to being at it all day, I was quite worn out from it. Haven't ever put that much effort into it again.

    King's Knight
    Furthest Progress:
Last stage with all 4 characters, failed in using the correct magic formation to get passed a barrier.

    Kiwi Kraze
    08/22/08
    Stage 3-1

    The Krion Conquest
    Furthest Progress:
    Stage 2-3
    06/06/08
    1st try: stage 1-3
    2nd try: stage 2-1

    Kung Fu Heroes
    Furthest Progress:
Played this one a few times, only made it up to the later levels due to warps, so even if I had beaten it I wouldn't have counted it until I was able to do it all the way.

    Laser Invasion
    Furthest Progress:
Got to the last stage, the Death Star-like corridor leading to the final boss. I did beat it with the 10 lives code, but its never going to be considered official til I can do it with the default lives.

    Mad Max
    Furthest Progress:
??? - Back to the Future 2 & 3, Bill & Ted, and this game, not sure which of the 3 I felt most lost in, but this one is made worst due to limited fuel for your car, not enough for exploring.

    Mig-29: Soviet Fighter

    Mighty Bomb Jack
    Furthest Progress:
Weird game, got through quite a few rooms, can't really say much more about it.

    Mutant Virus
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 4, not even sure how to kill the virus in some rooms, sometimes I manage to do so, but most of the time it gets out of control and takes over, one of the most annoyingly difficult games for me that I've tried numerous times to understand so as to play it better, yet to no avail.

    Nightshade

Got to Metro City, then called it quits, wasn't in the mood to go any further.

    Pro Wrestling

    Punisher, The
    Furthest Progress:
I don't even remember, I think I had it logged down in a notebook somewhere, but only fought a couple bosses.

    Puzznic
    Furthest Progress:
Though its been a long time since I last put any effort into this game, 11-5 is the furthest I've gotten on Puzznic, never could figure out this particular puzzle, and I refuse to look at any faqs, or even to skip it via passwords and come back to it after solving the later puzzles. I have beaten, within the first few hours of owning the game, Gravnic, that one was too easy.

    Shooting Range
    Furthest Progress:
I think I actually beat this one once many years ago, but can't recall for sure.

    Silent Service
    Furthest Progress:
I didn't have the patience yet for this game, the most I did was blow up a few ships, actually I think I passed a mission or two, but I can't recall, its not of any importance.

    Sky Shark
    Furthest Progress:
Stage 5. Nearly transparent enemy shots make this one really tough, plus they also have near perfect aim too.

    Slalom
    08/22/08
    Snowy Hill 3rd coarse

    Smash T.V.
    Furthest Progress:
    Stage 3 (boss)

    Solomon's Key
    Furthest Progress:
Unfortunely I don't recall what stage I got to, somewhere close to stage 20.

    Solstice
    Furthest Progress:
Years ago I mapped the game out on paper, showing locations of items, where to go next, that sorta stuff, solving the game with codes though, I have yet to try it without codes.

    Spelunker
    09/13/07
    2nd quest, 3rd stage, score of 299.790
    09/14/07
2nd quest, 4th stage (I reach the last set of blue and red doors, only to realize too late that I was missing the red key, I lost while back-tracking searching for it, darn, so close to beating it twice in a row), score 354.270

    Star Force
    Furthest Progress:
Old school shooter hardness, and not much in the way of variety other than crazy enemy patterns.

    Star Soldier
    Furthest Progress:
Star Soldier is made even harder with you being able to pass behind/under the background, which isn't implemented very well at all, I didn't get through but a few stages.

    Star Trek: The Next Generation
    10/28/08
    Mission 3

    Starship Hector
    Furthest Progress:
About mid-way through stage 2. Weak ass ship with slow firing rate, not a fun shooter.

    Star Voyager
    Furthest Progress:
Figured out the game pretty well, at least it doesn't have those crappy horizontal scrolling stages that Destination Earthstar has, I found everything I needed to beat it, but I'm just not very good at fighting off enemy spacecraft here.

    Stealth ATF
    Furthest Progress:
A dozen or so stages before I gave up because it got monotonous.

    Super Gloveball
