Hey I taking ideas for a good nes tournment at the store. We have had a tournment for snes , gensis and next month is game cube. So I thought for Nov it would be good for a Nes tournmaent.
If you want a BIG tournament, do a game everyone knows and is familiar with. Meaning: Tetris. Of course, you'll have wringers show up if your prizes are big enough...or even if not, some people like to smash face just for bragging rights and $5 store credit. Because it's all they do and they want a medal for it, or something. Don't ask me, but they do.
If you want a GOOD tournament, do a surprise game nobody knows/remembers well, but has a good learning curve, a definitive "wash out" point to eliminate the men from the boys and keep the bracket moving, and of course, displays a score at/after game over. Also spread prizes out among a larger bracket instead of one big lump prize.
Not sure what you're looking for, I can make recommendations depending.
Tetris or DR. Mario, as dangevin stated, something that everyone knows. I would go more for that then the "good" tournament, especially if it's your first one. Once you get a crowd to participate, then you can go onto the good one.
Yea I have thought about Dr. Mario but my wife will want to get in it. We have been doing fighting tournment, might need to change it up some. The prize that we give is a gift card to the store. I was trying to think of a great fighting game for the NES. I had tought about doing tag team wrestling or something like that.
Dr. Mario is out. I would hate to smoke everyone in the store like I did at the campout Besides too many people have watched me play at the shop and already told me no way would they enter that tourny.
However, Excitebike races seem like a great idea!!
You should bust out a Power Pad for the final round, with some 2-Player World Class Track Meet. That would make for an epic tournament.
Some suggestion rules: 1. No hands allowed, of course. 2. Jumping off to the side and jumping back on in the long/triple jump is allowed. It's intense to squeeze out those last couple inches, and not have your dude fall on his face.

Set a certain time limit for say 4 games.
Pick 4 games from different genres or something: sports game, action game, shooter game, platformer
If you plan it enough in advance you could come up with a forumla to total all the games score into 1.
sports: arch rivals
shooter: gradius
action: contra
platformer: ?
