N64 randomly resetting

My N64 from 2006 has been a champ since the day I got it off eBay. But just recently I brought it with me along with an everdrive 64 where I'm currently staying, wanted to try out a tube TV. Went fine until my N64 started to reset randomly. Yes, the one problem everyone fears with N64, has happened to me.

The console never resets at the everdrive 2.5 rom selection screen, only when a game is running. Only one controller with an extension cable and rumble pak is plugged in. I am currently testing with just a controller and nothing else, so far so good in Paper Mario... knock on wood.

What I am mainly asking is what all are the known causes of N64 random resets? I used to think it was the reset button itself somehow from what I've read before online, but now I'm not sure.

  • The reset button itself frequently gets gunk in it that will cause the button to stay depressed. This is easily cleaned. You could also have issues with the power supply caps. They are known to fail. Lastly sometimes a dirty console can experience issues like this. Literally pieces of fuzz or bug fragments can cause pins to bridge.
  • Funny, I never heard of this problem before now! Interested to see how this goes, please keep us updated! Good luck!
  • I had this happen with an N64 once before, it was the power supply.

Took it with me on the road for work and it would start randomly resetting after about half an hour of playing. Tried a new power supply and it worked fine after that.
  • So far nothing I've done has prevented the resetting, I'll look into a new power adapter, thanks guys.
  • is the power supply 3rd party?

not that anything can't go wrong with oem, but 9x out of 10 they are superior.
  • I've had at least one first-party official power supply with problems. It probably had bad capacitors. I would have to switch power off/on rapidly to get the N64 to boot up.
  • I tested my N64, Everdrive and power adapter at home, left it on running paper mario overnight and it never reset. I'm thinking the problem lies with the power quality at the place I'm staying at.
  • Always try a different outlet if you're having power issues with anything, process of elimination. Also power strips are often a culprit. Glad to hear it's working!
