NES sharp TV help!

I have a nes sharp tv that's been with me for about 5 years. I last used it about a year ago and it worked fine. Today I went to use it and the screen only displays in black plus the picture is wobbly. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

  • The only thing I can think of is inadequate power. If it is pluged into the wall, I don't know what to say, but if it is on a power strip, try moving it to the wall.

***edit*** Do not take apart your tv, there is some pretty high voltage nonsense in there that could kill you. If it is an internal issue, and you decide to go about doing it yourself, please be careful. Discharge the monitor, wait a while for the caps to drain, do all the necessary steps to protect yourself.
  • I can't remember where I read it but back when I bought mine it had some controller port issues and I ran into someone discussing this problem online. I Don't remember the details but I think something internally needs to be replaced.
  • Your NTSC crystal is the likely issue. It's responsible for both color and sync. Replace the crystal or check the capacitors responsible for conditioning its frequency. Plausible that a cap's value has degraded.

Check to see if the issue persists with an external device displaying on the TV or just the internal NES itself. If the former then it is the crystal circuit on the chassis.
  • I tested it with a an external signal it did the same thing. Where is the ntsc crystal? Do you have a pic? I cant find anything online.
  • Find the chassis schematic. If this is beyond your skillset you should not work on a tube television and consult a local repair shop. (if you can find one) Otherwise you could kill yourself.
  • I was searching online but couldnt find the schematics. I ended up opening it up and found it myself. I found 2 crystals so I will change both. I have changed caps on tons of arcade monitors and am confident in discharging the picture tube.

    Thanks for the help!
  • Referencing the part number printed on the chassis board or even just the jungle chip ID can often pull up schematics for related televisions that are essentially the same. But anyway, good luck!
  • I changed the crystals and the tv is still acting the same. I also reflowed the solder joints on all the caps. I didnt see any leaking caps on there. Any other ideas?
  • Sorry, double post
  • A bad capacitor can look fine from the outside but still be out of range, and at 28/29 years, it would be a good idea to recap the whole set now. You can try replacing just the caps pertinent to the frequency circuit.
