Need Gameboy Micro repair help

I have two Gameboy Micros that have faults I've been working on for some time, and I'm looking for some help diagnosing and repairing since I've run out of ideas.

Micro 1:  It had a knackered charging port, which I've replaced with one from a link cable.  That went really well, but it's still not charging.  I've replaced fuse F2, but it still doesn't light up when I plug the charger in.  I *might* have overheated something when removing the charging port?  No idea what, but that's my only guess right now.  It turns on and works fine using a battery charged from elsewhere, so it's only the charging circuit that's affected.

Micro 2:  Wouldn't power on.  I jumped fuse F2 like a dumbass, which obviously did nothing.  I recently replaced fuse F1, which was much more probable, but now when I power it on, smoke comes out.  Yeah, I'm thinking this one has a short somewhere, but no idea where to start with this one.  Cosmetically it's fine inside, so it hasn't been dunked in a glass of water or something like that.  To recap, did nothing when powered on before, with fuses F1 and F2 replaced, it emits smoke from somewhere central.  So I guess F1 was blown, but there's actually an underlying issue.

Any help appreciated, even if it's telling me to visit another forum!

  • As for micro2, you let the blue smoke out. It's probably done. As for not charging, my guess is that you are not making a proper connection. Perhaps consider swapping the charging ports of the one you blew up. I would do a visual check of the components surrounding the charging port, if you used a heat gun or something, you could have accidentally shifted components around. Good luck!
  • Thanks.  I fear for Micro 2 as well.  It was only super brief, less than 1 second x 2.  Any idea what the cause was?  I don't want to give up yet if I can help it.

I've checked my soldering on the port, and it looks very good, but your tip about a component sliding around is a great shout.  I'll give it a look later!

Probably a short somewhere on the board.
