Mario 4ft Statue

What's a good price to pay for one of the mario 4ft store display statue in ok condition. I don't have a good picture of it and from what I can see it's dust covered so hard to tell the actual shape it's in. Also I'm not sure which release version it is, is there a way to tell that as well. I have the opportunity to pick one up next weekend and wanting to make sure I don't overpay. Also is there a way to repaint it and if so what is the best paint and colors to match.

Sounds like you have something against 70s porn...

LOL, good advice!  The 1989 (I believe that's the year) version is slightly creepy.  The more popular one came out in in 1995 or 1996, and is the NESM40M.  That one is worth between $1,500-$2500 depending on condition.

I have no clue about the repainting of these, but the NESM40M has a very glossy finish that would be pretty hard to duplicate IMO.
  • Here's the only pic I have looks like the face on the right side of pic is missing paint but not sure if that's just the way the picture is

  • These are neat but how does anyone have the room for it unless they are a storefront. I'm surprised they command the prices they do as the size / bulkiness should work against them I would think. Restricts the buyer pool to local (or semi-local) and isn't functional like a kiosk or arcade machine.

Honestly dude, I have 6 kiosks and 8 arcades in my basement, and nothing gets people more excited (the first time they see it) than the Mario statue! lol  I actually had to have a no drinks allowed policy in the basement, because all of my friends and their girlfriends would love to get trashed and take a picture beside Mario... and no I'm not kidding! lol

    Cgfeelit,

The picture you linked is the NESM40M that I was talking about. But the one you linked is in VERY poor condition IMO!  I honestly wouldn't pay anything over $500 for it, as repainting it (and making it look good) is gonna be extremely difficult.

That's what I was thinking price wise also but I didn't realize the premium the brought in good condition I figured 800-1000. As for room if I do get it then I'll have to get rid of something either the Wii U kiosk or ds kiosk or my hamms bear store statue so I can see where jone is coming from with the room issue but this has been one of my top wants since collecting and to find it local will make it a little harder to refrain from overspending on it
  • Looks like the arm is broken. That's not an easy fix. I've painted one of these about a year ago. It's a lot of tedious tape and masking. I used automotive base coat and clear coat. As far as color match goes any quality body shop should be able to match the colors. If I looked around I'm sure I can find all the paint codes.

How did it turn out after painting? I didn't even notice the arm would that be something needed to be refiberglassed or however they are put together?

Most autobody shops should be able to repair the plastic.
  • That looks great maybe that will be the route I go then if I can buy it for a reasonable price have the local body shop paint and fix the arm
  • Just a heads up it's probably going to cost over $1000 for the paint job. Might be more for the repair. It took about 20 hours of work and spent over $200 on materials alone. Use this to negotiate a fair price. Good luck man!!

This is something I have wondered for years.

I could probably justify paying stupid money for one of these and I have absolutely nowhere to put one. Definitely not a sensible purchase...

If its something someone really wants have it! Thats what collecting is all about. I'm more baffled that there is enough buyers out there actively desiring this to make the price so high. To each their own essentially, I'd pay top dollar for things I know other people wouldn't bat an eye at. Lol
  • Thanks for the info. Ended up getting him for $280. Would in plasticweld work to reattach the arm? I'm going to take him to the local body shop and see what it would cost to repair it but if they are high then I plan on doing it myself. The paint on it was actually in good shape just really dirty.

Dude, that turned out absolutely amazing... but I can't believe you turned it into a Luigi! LOL

What did that cost you to restore anyway?  I'm guessing quite a bit, as the shop probably put A LOT of hours into it!
  • I bought one that someone turned into a school mascot, I will try to find a picture. It was kind of a green luigi theme and pretty beat up. paid 60, sold it for 500 same day on eBay and the buyer happily paid 150 for shipping. He was supposedly going to have it painted gold.
