Mega Man 64: Two Different Versions?

I bought Mega Man 64 for myself years ago and was surprised that I was able to save the game onto the cartridge itself. I remember when I borrowed the game from a friend as a kid, her copy of the game asked for a Controller Pak/Memory Card whenever I wanted to save. I remember this distinctly, because I'd spend a couple hours trying to go as far as I could in one sitting because I didn't have a memory card at the time (furthest I went was with the fight with Tiesel Bon before getting a Game Over and starting from the beginning). I questioned it when I got the game for myself, but at the time I couldn't care less because I actually got a game I could play through (I even had a Controller Pak expecting the game to require it). But I do want to get closure to it and have some sort of explanation. Am I remembering things right when I was a kid, or are there really two versions of Mega Man 64 where one saves through the cart and the other via memory cards? Looking through stock box art convinces me that there were indeed two versions, with one requiring the memory card (as well as having Expansion Pack capabilities) and the other just highlighting rumble features. It'd be interesting to see what was enhanced with the Expansion Pack, so I'm curious if someone has a copy of Mega Man 64 that needed the memory card to save.

  • I have played like 4 different copies of this through my life due to renting it from various places and so forth, and one of the biggest problems for me was that it lacked controller pak support. I had restart every time I'd rent it from somewhere new.

I don't know why my dad insisted on visit so many different rental places but I suspect he was probably keeping tapes.

My copy now is also incompatible.

None of them utilized the expansion pak either, which is something I payed a lot of attention to due to having gotten it around the same time.

That image you uploaded is intriuging. It could have been so much better with those features.
  • Sounds like we needed each other's cart back in the day lol because I swear the one I played needed a Controller Pak to save and that was it. I hope someone out there could prove that I'm not crazy and owns a copy that didn't save on the cart.
  • Do you think maybe you played the PS1 version? That would explain why you played it up to a point but couldn't save. I remember tons of people going without memory cards back then.
  • Nope, I remember distinctively playing on the N64 because that's all I had. It wasn't until later when my cousins told me that they played the exact same game (Mega Man Legends) on the PS1 and that there was a second one, too.
