Virtual Boy makes a buzzing noise, no picture

I've just purchased a Virtual Boy system, and there's something wrong with it that I haven't read about before. It makes a loud buzzing sound every couple of seconds, whether a cartridge is in the system or not.

There's also no picture if I try to play a game, but audio seems to work. I am aware of the common screen issues that NES Freak fixes, but is the buzzing related to that?

Here's a video of the problem. It sounds louder in person.

Does anyone know what could be causing this, and if so, can I fix it?

  • Is it the oscillating mirror? It sounds like a gear is caught or something to me.
  • You think something is physically interfering with the mirror's movement? That's not a bad idea. Might even be an easy fix. I'll check it out as soon as I can get my hands on a long screwdriver.

the sensor that syncs one of the mirors has gone bad so its tying to corect its self but cant.  thats why you hear the buzzing noise the mirror is hitting the frame.  i cab fix it but i would have to get a whole new assembly.  unless you can tell me which side isn't working with a flash light the cost would be 50 dollars for the part.  plus shipping. i do have some extras but only for one side

Yeah, regardless of how this mirror issue turned out, I was going to approach you about the screen fix eventually. The hassle of shipping was the only real barrier.
