I would personally pay 16-17k on Grey and upwards of 25-30 on gold. if you know someone that has them , let me know
A gold cart is hard to say as they don't come up very often, a good range would be 30-45k (wide ranging I know)
Whereas there is quite a range. You're not going to find a grey cart less than 16k (poor condition) and likely going to pay 20-25k for a good condition one (there have been recent personal sales in that range)
Wordd.
a hard pill to swallow for the collectors who missed out buying them cheaper.

Nah... games are fairly flat in general lately. I don't see grays holding $20k-$25k all that long. I would rather be a seller than buyer at those prices and cheaper prices will come in the future.

Obviously to each their own. I disagree in regards to the NWC Carts - I agree that games are leveling off and decreasing in price to a degree at this time - NWC are trophies/Grails... History. And my belief is they will remain that way for quite a long time.
Many have not seen the prices/exchanges of NWC in quite a while. As they are Mostly private/cash exchanges - with things being with hush hush. And at least for now 16-25k
Take any "private" sales with a grain of salt. Its easy to say you payed "x" to drive up the value artificially.
Especially when the same person seems to be involved in about 50% of those deals.

Well you can only measure things relative to others in the hobby. NWC is but one item in an endless sea of video game collecting. And for me personally, I could take $20-$25k and come up with a ton of nice video game collectibles I'd rather get for it.
And the "trophy/grail" thing could be a pro or con depending on how you view it. It's a con in the sense of not being required for "the set" that most people refer to (ignoring the debate of what's in / out). It's a pro in the sense of most people desire it just for the status symbol it invokes in the community. Either way I confident it'll cool off within the next couple of years or so.
And I see the issue with "private sales" - I'm the half full type too. But being in the know (not my sale) of several of these sales/exchanges recently (I.e. The last 1.5 years) they're going on and people do not wish to announce what they paid. Again in that 17-25k range.
Why they don't? I don't know. Embarrassed they paid so much? Safety from burglary? Shy? Hiding from government?
Finally, I don't compare this and stadium events. Apples and oranges. Stadium events is needed to have a complete set. NWC is not. Whereas plenty of people are willing to say complete NES Set; those same people will drop 10,000+ to say Complete NES Set - Stadium Events + NWC.
I value and appreciate your opinion. I just disagree. Time will tell.

That's fine that you don't compare the 2,. However,. They have been neck to neck in value for a very long time

Yes, part of what I'm suggesting in statements above. In terms of being different. The NWC has pulled way ahead (for whatever reason) When compared to a LOOSE Stadium Events.
Yes. Pulled way ahead,. In "private" sales...
Haha. Believe what you will. I'm a long standing member here and have no reason to lie. Plus one sold "privately" at TooManyGames Convention for 20k+
So yeah.... Privately

I understand. No offense taken. You're going to see less and less public or eBay sales, no one wants the pay taxes and fees.
You can still sell things publicly with no taxes or fees.
The IRS disagrees with you. Collectibles are considered a capital asset and video games are a collectible.

In regards to NWC gold, I'm definitely not an expert on the subject but I know enough to know that 40-50k will not buy one, as I have offered $70k and have been rejected.
I agree with Mike on this issue. Stadium events and NwC are apples and oranges. You do not see comic book collectors running after stadium events like they are running after NWC right now.Personally I think that all of the outsiders that are coming into the hobby is what's pushing up the price of NWC. I've had my NWC up on eBay for the past few months. The amount of people that have inquired that have nothing to do with video gaming is incredible. As far as value, yes I agree things have been wonky. Sales in the last year and a half have been anywhere from $12,000 all the way up to $25,000. So anyone that says fair market value is a certain number, they're lying. There's no fair market value for NWC, I cannot tell you how many people have made an offer on mine on eBay and told me what they think their fair market value is. Fair of market value for something like this is what someone is willing to sell it for and what someone is willing to pay. This isn't a SMB3 with many recorded sales each day. Some people want a quick sale with no trouble and some people want to milk every hundred dollars. An example I can give is Earlier this year I tried to buy the one that was found and sold at the game store in Ohio. There was a severe snowstorm that prevented me from getting there on The Friday and instead of waiting one more day the guy took $1500 less than what I was going to pay. Then you have an instance like last year when that cart sold for $25k on eBay, also not to mention the same week that $12,000 cart sold a few other changed hands for much more. So with things fluctuating that much how is it even possible to come up with a fair market value.? I would love to debate this topic as it is hard for me to understand how people can use the word "fair market value" with a NWC.

If there is no "fair market value", it's not really fair to say what's pushing up the price. It's people with too much money trying to artificially inflate a rare item for future sales IMO.
If I foolishly purchase a SE for $20K, does that mean that I've driven up the price?
As for NWC gold. Just because you were turned down for an offer of $70K from one person,. Doesn't mean somebody else may not take that offer. I'm not saying that the $40-50K estimate is correct, but I'm also not saying that north of $70K is either

Yeah. I disagree again. No one is dropping 16-25k to "artificially increase" the price. It's the way the rare NINTENDO market is going. Just like odd memorabilia and signs/kiosks. 5 years ago many of those things were less than $100 now they're consistently in the 100s and 1000s.
As was mentioned by another poster earlier in the thread, it's hard for much of the community to see the prices go this way. Especially if you're still actively seeking an item (like the NWC) At an affordable price

If you can turn around and sell them for more, always claiming inner knowledge of "private sales", who knows. There is a small enough amount of these floating around that people could manipulate the market if they wanted, especially with the level of secrecy.

Conspiracy theories aside... Anything is possible
But everyone has seen these go up in both desirability and price over the years. That has been long standing. So call that all market manipulation? I dont think so. There is a cap to that craziness... especially in this hobby. The other factor is many people trade up for these; not only with items, but sell chunks of their collections or extras to get this one fabled cart.
Then there are those long standing members who have owned multiple of these carts (gold and grey) who have sworn they will go up in price/value and that every sale they had made topped the last.
Remembering something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. And people are paying...

Exactly...
I sold an SE to my cat for 10k.
Then he sold it back to me for 11k.
Then I sold it to my other Cat for 12k.
Then she sold it back to me for 13k.
Then I sold it to my grandma for 14k.
Then she sold it back to me for 15k.
Moral of the story, my SE is worth 15k.
I will let you guys in on a private sale-
