Is there a natural order or starting point you'd recommend for the series?
It's like Final Fantasy in the sense that you can start wherever, some references in the text might just go over your head but you won't be missing anything. I dislike 1 and 2 but I loved Oath, Origin, VII, and VIII. If you have a PC that is even moderately capable of gaming, the series goes on sale on Steam pretty frequently. I think Origin can be had for around $5 usually.
edit: I see Gloves is already on top of the Ys history lesson!

Ah right, I forgot to mention, many of these are available on Steam! I always forget since I have them all physical. >_>
I havent played most of the newer Ys, but I would recommend Felghana from what I have played. Same engine as 5 I believe, but much better load times. The I & II release is a good choice too, but pretty pricey
Watch the write speed on that SD card -- seems lower than recommended by Nintendo. I'm still waiting for a crazy Prime Day deal.
Impacts? Would it cause games with autosave to noticeably hiccup?
I haven’t used a slower card myself, but I suspect impacts would simply be longer wait times every time the system writes to the card. Probably most noticeable when downloading larger digital games.
Isn’t game save data usually written to internal storage, or am I remember that wrong? (I’m currently on a teleconference for work, otherwise I’d be looking all this stuff up.)
I'm fairly well versed on Ys as I've followed it since it came out on the TG16 CD format and then the third more mainstream on the SNES. Like others said it's much like Final Fantasy in that they're never really bound together, but there are some overarching points to them that pop up repeatedly with basics like magics, some items, in game religion references, maybe a comment or two eluding to it (like Zelda did with the Hero of Time kind of.) Origins while far newer is if I remember hundreds of years before Ys1+2 where Adol gets his start in the franchise. Ys3 being like the Zelda 2 of the bunch is kind of love hate and taboo, taboo enough even the developer a few years back dropped the number and remade it like the other games from Ys7 back as an overhead zelda 1 and crystalis style game and called it Oath in Felghana (the land from Ys3 originally.)
I have no idea how far I am into Ys8, but it's very unique and not much at all like the old games, a huge change and for the benefit of the franchise much like how Breath of the Wild made Zelda finally fun and interesting again instead of a sad rerun of old hat. I can strongly recommend Ys 8 on the Switch even if you knew nothing of the old games as it entirely stands magnificently on its own merits.
And then tomorrow I should have a companion to swap out with it a bit as Sonic Mania Plus arrives. I remember the makers of it had some a fantastic bit of homebrew fanboy magic showing a competent Sonic game could be made years ago unlike Sonic Team and their endless failures so I look forward to it.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is up for order on Super Rare Games. It's European so doesn't count toward the NA set, but Switch is region free and this is honestly one of my favorite Switch games. It's a blast if you can get a couple people together to play it. About $45 shipped to the US, cheaper than the last time I ordered from them.
EDIT - They've also announced physical versions of Mutant Mudds Collection, Worms W.M.D., Steredeen: Binary Stars, Knights of Pen & Paper 1 and 2, and Fairune on their twitter account. Also n++ and The Adventure Pals.
I also got Sonic Mania plus in. I didn't realize it was going to come with a book and slip cover. I never played Sonic mania but I am enjoying it a lot and recommend it if you like old school sonic. I also picked up Megaman legacy Collection 1-2, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary collection, and have X collection coming to me, and with a New Toejam and earl this year, one of my all time favorite games. switch is filling in my childhood and nostalgia fix nicely. Only If I could get a Castlevania collection then i'd be set.
I also just found out about "Flipping Death" coming out in September i'm going to probably have to check out, since I love quirky and offbeat games.

Edit: Reddit has an faq on it. Order cancelled. The wait continues

I agree with gloves that you'd probably dig Celceta and VII! Kind of a toss up for me between VII and VIII at this point.
Hahaha that avi still kills me every time. Sonic Mania physical droppin tomorrow! Way to not include a copy with the big-box SE :bitter:

According to the FAQ some guys (eg LA Noire) actually require 60 megs/sec. Since I only ever want to get one card I'll just hold off for a "UHS" one
UHS micro sd deals are up as part of Amazon Prime Day. I've ordered the 200GB card for $45.60.

Also ordered NBA2K18 for $17 and Payday 2 for $28.
Is Prime required for the deal on NBA 2K18?
I don't think so. I've logged out and still see the deal price....

128GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Card (100MB/s) for $26.36 — I just ordered one myself.

I also picked up a USB to Ethernet adapter for $3.99 (use promo code MUMAG5XH at checkout — details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitchDeals/comments/8zet1f/amazonus_usb_30_to_gigabit_ethernet_adapter_399/)

Psshhh! I got this!
Can add Oceanhorn to whatever list now. Just showed up today.
It's actually not a bad little Zelda-like, but it came out for iPhones in 2013 for 6 bucks, I don't think I can justify it.
