Japanese PS2
Have a Japanese PS2 I am looking to play. Can I just plug a PS3 power cord into it and plug it into my wall? It came with some memory cards and controllers, would they be special in any way or can a Japanese PS3 use US accessories? How would I tell which country/region they are from?

Shit, good catch. I remember thinking since my Japanese PS2 is a slim, I could use the US slim cord but it doesn't have the same plug. I noticed the PS3 had the same type of plug and it didn't even occur to me that I needed a power supply lol. Is my only chance a specifically Japanese plug and using a power converter?
It should work fine. Here is a $7 shipped one on eBay.

This is what the back of my Japanese PS2 Slim looks like (the grey on top, not the black bottom):
Can you play Japanese ps1 games on a Japanese ps2 ?
Sure, but not on an American PS2 as the discs are region locked. You can get Free McBoot for $8 on eBay from some kid and just burn the games you want to play on your American PS2 after patching them I believe.
I have a slim PS2 cord, the issue is that the part where the cord plugs into the console is the same as a Fat PS2/PS3, and not the hole like with a US slim.

I've never seen that before, but you should be good from the forum posts I just read.
Actually, now that I look I don't think it is a Japanese PS2. The model is SCPH-90006 which seems to be Hong Kong. The code was "NTSC-J" and I didn't realize countries outside of Japan used that designation.
Honestly, just check the sticker for the voltage. If it's over 120v don't try it.

Cool. Thank you.
Although i I ask because I am using a USA ps2 slim to play import ps1 games right now. I swap discs.

Yeah, 220-240. I'll just have to sell it as is lol.
Yeah it runs on uk pal adapter originally but i dont know, might as well support 120v? The n64 can do that, i mean i have a japanese unit and use a uk adapter on it. Probably since its an external adapter it doesnt matter (so the slim ps2 might work the same)
Maybe google has the answer
Edit: just saw your photo, its a late scph-9006 in silver finish with internal power supply, so should only support 220v. Dont fry the poor thing
Things to note:
* The newer 9000x models fixed the little plastic ribbon cable that attaches to the laser assembly so it would keep from scratching up discs like the older models (A common problem that to this day people think it's the laser that scratches the disc, but it's actually the cable that attaches to it)
* US PS1 games do not work on a Japanese PS2 or vice versa. They are NTSC, but they're region locked. You'd have to use a Free McBoot or other methods to get it to work. You CAN use memory cards and controllers.
* As far as power, make sure you're using the right voltage before using it. I'm sure it's fine right out the box, but you could end up messing it up in the long run. Not a good deal when the power supply is built inside the console.
If its from hk chances are its been modded to play copied and other region cds. Might be worth opening it to see if fheres a mod chip, u should see it easily from some wire job on the mobo and added pcb (1 or 2 usually)

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the silver PS2 was mine. I was just using that photo (that I found on Google) to show what the back of mine looks like and why I cannot use a Slim power cord.

I know that the pic isn't yours, but if you have both types, I'd just unplug the cord from the brick on the black one and plug it to the silver one. Any non-polarized power plug would do.
But again, you might have to use some sort of step-down thingamajig to ensure the proper voltage.
