MicroMachines Camerica Cart (Not aladdin) missing switch

Basically what it says in the title, my gold copy of MM has no A/B switch on it, looks like some sort of key or something would slide on there to complete the connection. Is this normal ?

  • Yes, a small run of MM's have a small connector in place of the switch. It's uncommon, but certainly not rare.
  • Curious then, does this have some other method of bypassing the lockout chip then or is it in an "Always On" state ?
  • Hmm I've never seen that before. I know the 2nd run of the Aladdin, the bypass deal was controlled by software instead of a manual switch, maybe some late runs of the gold carts did the same. Could you get a PCB pic by any chance?
  • I didn't know about this one either, please post a scan.

  • Ok, I'll take some pics with my digital cam later tonight when I get home from work (after midnight) & post them here.

    Thanks

    EDIT:

One other quick question. In the newsletter it mentions not having the switch in the on position (a) on those carts on a toploader, I've had those in mine before & didn't notice anything ???
  • I was mistaken about that, in fact I already posted the correction a little while ago image It should be in position 'A' when using on a top-loader. I don't have a top-loader myself, but I brought that up because I remember quite well what happened when me a buddy rented Fire Hawk long ago and the switch was set to 'B' when we got it. Popped it in his top-loader and when it was turned on, there was a loud buzzing in the audio and was causing some video distortion. We didn't have a clue what that was all about back then image
  • OK, here's the pics as promised......a little late...sorry
  • Interesting, what does the first line of text on the smaller chip say? It should start with 'BF' also on the front of the pcb itself, is there an ID anywhere, such as BIC-##?
  • All I could find as far as a BIC was

    BIC-6

The text on the smaller chip says:

    BF9093
    91320
  • This thing is actually *older* than the ones with a switch. It doesn't appear to have the means to defeat the CIC at all, so it shouldn't worked on an un-modded front-loader. That particular board was made in August '91, which is well before the top-loader... which leads me to believe there must have been a "jumper pak" of sorts either shipped with the game, or sold separately that you would stick into that slot on the back. Who has one!? image
  • Weird thing is that it does work in my unmodded front loader.

Well it was definitely the first run of MM carts, but mine works fine on my 1987 purchased front loader that has never been clipped or modified in any way. So there is definitely a lockout defeat in those carts somewhere, but it would be up to you guys with the know-how to figure out what it is image
  • ...the hell!? I'm very surprised to hear that! The mapper chip must have some thing built-in then, but it appears to be the same chip used in other later games as well. Seems like a step backwards...
  • Cool, I didn't know about this stuff either! Interesting topic! image
