  • They're both fantastic games, honestly. I put 66 hours into completing Ys VIII and loved it. It was my first Ys game, and it inspired me to purchase Ys I&II for DS and Ys III for SNES (thanks to some recommendations from the fine folks around here), which are now at the top of my backlog.

I'm now playing Octopath, just over 82 hours in, and I'd say I'm about halfway through. Really taking my time, doing everything I can find, and enjoying the heck out of it.

I guess it comes down to whether you're hankering for an action RPG or a turn-based RPG. If you like these sorts of games at all, you owe it to yourself to play both eventually.

Honestly, I'd say Ys VIII which is probably controversial. It's a fun game and is on the verge of a hack and slash. I enjoyed the Hell out of my time with it. Think I spent 13 hours? It was a slow start but it got good. Octopath didn't draw me in enough after the initial hours to make me drop everything like I thought it would. Not to say it's a bad game, I did enjoy it. But when I keep thinking about going back to an RPG Ys VIII generally wins the war in my mind.

You don't really strike me as an RPG guy though

I haven't played either game so I have no horse in this race

Actually I'll say Darkest Dick, because "beating dead horse"

  • I do enjoy RPGs but I just don't want to dedicate myself to them. I'd rather enjoy short bursts of fun rather than the long haul pay off. Some of my favorite games of all time are RPGs. Diablo 2, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts. I just don't have the time for them like when I was a teenager. You dedicate yourself to one game and its admirable. I think I have ADD because I constantly have to do something new and interesting. I just can't focus on one thing for a period of time. 'Darkest Dick' as you say is solid and I'll back you on that. If you can dedicate the time... I'd probably choose that over Octo or Ys. Awesome game but you can't play it casually.

Edit: rereading my post I just wanted to say D2 I would play like 12 hours at a time in high school, FFX I've beaten numerous times as well as KH. Hell, I beat the Old Republic games numerous times each and I constantly start new characters in The Old Republic. I love them... I just can't do it. My brain won't let me.

It took me 2 months to get 44 hours in on Battlechasers. From all I've read, I think I would like Darkest Dungeon, but I don't have the time for it right now. What I really need to do is finish Xenoblade, but I'm afraid I've forgotten the mechanics on it and I keep outting it off. I think I'm on the final chapter too. Will defintely finish before Torna is released. I think i need something I can just put down and come back to on the fly. Since I juat finished a turn based game, I think I will go the action route with Ys and mix it up a bit. Thanks, guys!
  • Ys you can definitely put down with minimal effort coming back to. Octo is a bit deeper.

The final chapter of Xenoblade is almost all boss battles and long cut scenes. So block out a few hours to get through it.

  • I might of missed it but looks like undertale will get a western release on the 15th with a collectors edition. I been wanting to play this game for a while.
  • I saw there is a game coming out for Switch in 2019 - Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. Looks kinda interesting - fun art style and quirky game.

On another note --- does anyone know what the real release date is for Oceanhorn physical release? I'm getting conflicting information whether it was released in June or July 2018, and what date. This was the physical release that was distributed by Limited Run Games, but not part of their numbered LRG release set.

The preorders went up in June (during their E3 presentation). My preorder was fulfilled on July 12, it's possible they sent others out a couple days earlier. It's hard to give LRG titles a definitive release date because they tend to ship them out in batches. The first 5000 copies shipped then, and the remaining orders aren't being sent out until September (tentatively).
  • Thanks. D~Funk said 07/12 also so I'm going with that. Close enough!
  • I discovered a really cool price tracking website for Switch games: www.dekudeals.com

It's a great resource, especially how it lets you set up email alerts for price drops on specific games. I've found r/NintendoSwitchDeals to be really useful too.

  • I know we're doing a good job at documenting stuff but I really want to make certain about something. Penny Punching Princess does not come with a manual or anything? Just the case and cartridge? I saw it for sale at GameStop but it didn't have any extras. For some reason I had it in my head that it came with stuff. Was that just the edition that looked like a gold bar?

I think so. Not sure if the standard edition came with any extras.

Aguy’s thread here has some more detail on what came with the games.  I don’t see PPP listed

  • Some pretty good Amazon sales right now. Marios and Zelda are $45, Owlboy is $25, etc.

I picked up Resident Evil for $30

Same sale at Best Buy. GCU gets another 20% off.

The standard edition didn't come with anything besides the game. NIS did have a special edition exclusive to their website that you are referring to.
  • Thanks for the PPP info guys.

Here is another one I'm confused by. On 3DS you're able to adjust your stats in Code of Princess after leveling. I have no idea how to do this on the Switch version. Help?
  • Grabbed Dead Cells, Slain, and Penguin Wars today. Should give them all a whirl in the next few days.

Also gonna preorder that fishing game, comes with a special fishing rod controller

Did you preorder Legendary Fishing from Amazon or Gamestop?

I mean, honestly, how could you possibly confuse these two games?

Legendary FishingBass Pro Shops The Strike

  • Haha. Legendary Fishing does look pretty legendary....
  • Bass Pro The Strike CE is a 9 year old port of a Wii game that IGN gave a 4.8. Ubisofts Legendary Fishing has zero info aside from having "arcade-style" gameplay, a release date a month before BPS The Strike, and is $10 cheaper. I'm imagining that will mean a pretty rushed game being pushed to market to beat competitors. According to Gamestop, Rapala Pro is also being ported to the Switch with the same release day as BPS The Strike. It was release last year on the PS4/X1 but also received poor reviews and will be $30, like Legendary Fishing. I think I'll be skipping this round of fishing games, but if Xseed/Marvelous ever bring Fishing Resort over, that will be a day 1 for me. That definitely one of my most played Wii games.

And now for something completely different... Gamestop dropped a lot of prices for used Switch games over the past couple weeks. These are some highlights, but note that these prices include the 20% Elite discounts. If anyone wants to use my Elite discount, just PM me.

  • Looks like Diablo III is coming to Switch! Apparently Forbes leaked the news with an article that has since been taken down.
  • I got dead cells in the mail today, early as hell!
  • LRG is offering pre-orders for West of Loathing starting tomorrow morning. Ironically, it's listed as coming with a full color manual.
  • Got my Dimension Drive from Play Asia yesterday. The packaging is awesome.
