I honestly thought it was a prank this morning because the general presentation was so on point to what Nintendo did.  But after thinking about it, I realized that's pretty much on par for Sony.  Reglardless, I'm getting one.

Yeah Nintendo invented the whole dedicated plug and play console.  Now you have Atari Flashback and a bunch of other copycats stealing the idea!

Do you announce A++ titles to build hype or do you announce garbage and save A++ titles for later?  Sure, maybe a couple of good ones crop up but no way that 15 out of 15 are stud titles.

It's just a poorly hyped release that some people are going to rush out and reserve because they fall for the hype.  From a pure value perspective this offers much less value than the NES / SNES systems that were out at lower points.

I collect figures and see it mostly as just that. The fact that it plays games is a side bonus that I'll likely not even take advantage of. I'll be more than happy to have a little PlayStation on my PlayStation shelf. The price is a tad much, but I've spent the same on a number of figures, and base my personal value for these things on how much I like the source material.

That's awesome, I was just thinking I mainly want it to sit next to my other 2 sealed "classic systems" :-)

  • I just really like playstation and I love these little consoles in general. I don't expect some AMAZING list of remaining titles, at all. I imagine they would announce the most exciting ones initially, so I have low expectations, but still very curious to see what else they announce. I'm not really comparing it to the NES or SNES Classic. They all have their pros and cons.

I mean, I already have physical copies of FF7 and Wild Arms and a perfectly functioning playstation, and I'm STILL interested in this because I think it's cool. Is it silly? Is it novelty? Is it a 'cash-grab'? Perhaps - but that's ok, I know what I'm getting into and I like it. It's not like I'm falling for some super secret evil marketing ploy that I'll be tricked by. I see all of these as expensive little novelty items and I'm ok with that.

I mean, people spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on singular NES games whether because of rarity, or they love the game, or whatever else. So, good for them, and good for us PS lovers we get a little neat item

None of that changes the fact that people are specifically complaining about lack of titles for a system that hasn't released a game list yet.  Most people just enjoy complaining.

People are complaining about a lack of titles from the released list of titles.  1 out of 5 is a home run and the other 4 have niche appeal to people who really liked the game... they aren't "system sellers".

May as well have thrown Big Hurt Baseball on that list.

That's the exact opposite of how stuff like this works.  Their target audience is the person who hasn't played PS1 in many years and feels nostalgia for the games they REMEMBER.  The people like you or even me who only want the obscure games make up way to small of a market to turn a profit.

Right, I get that, but playstation position is different than Nintendo's was in releasing their plug and plays. NES and SNES graphics aged better than the N64 or PS1. Playstation has the playstation network which offer easy access to ps1 titles. Playstation games havent appreciated in value the same as Nintendo. Remastered versions are available for some of the PS1 IP'S. And PS1 graphics are somewhat compatible with modern tv's. Playstation needs a different marketing strategy.

None of those things will matter to the target audience.  You have to keep in mind that you (and most of us here) are not the target audience.  If they geared this thing toward us, they wouldn't sell nearly as many and they would probably lose money.

  • For those saying the $100 price point was to high, the promo video did mention that you can swap virtusl discs so... it looks like one benefit to this unit is that the software will be expandable. Granted, it will losd woth 20 games vs. Nintendo's 30 but having the option for discs with 2-5 games for $5-20 isn't a bad deal to me. This is an actual console. I'm pretty pumped.

Unrelated to this unit, but why I like the idea of all of these classic/retro units is that even if it requires a bit of hacking, at a minimum, we're getting new legit 1st party controllers. The #1 reason I want an N64 Classic Mini is so I can buy up 10 controllers, mod them and use them on my original N64. Hopefully it will have Hori-quality internals. I might even canabalize one of these PS1 Classic controllers because I need a couple for my original PS1 and most I find are old and really dirty with messed up cables.

While we are on the subject, the game list for the N64 Classic doesn't even have a single first party Nintendo game on it.

Several of the points I made are important because the target audience already has alternative in the market place. There are substitutes for the product and there are lower barriers to entry of playing a digital ps1 game today making the value of purchasing a repacked original lower.

Maybe they are asking more money for them because the are expecting to sell less and need the higher cost to be profitable.

It's actually quite appalling that FFVII is the only "stud" that make the initial leaked list of 5 titles. Tekken is at least some name recogniztion but Wild Arms, Jumping Flash and Ridge Racer? No way. Gran Turismo should have been on the list over Ridge Racer too.

x100 Gran Turismo is even a Sony title, pretty legendary one at that.  Hard pass at this time for me too, but if they add a Twisted Metal, MGS, maybe a Spyro, Hot Shots Golf, I'd certainly consider.  A Resident Evil would probably lock it down for me, but as others have said they may not include any Mature games (maybe Twisted Metal was i don't recall).  $100 is pretty stiff without dual shock and this poor list of titles.  Crazy they would open pre-orders and only provide 5 titles of 20...

EDIT - sure hope it comes in the original style box like the OG Playstation lol - now that would be nostalgic.

Are you that obtuse?  It's simple numbers and probability.  If 1 in 5 games were actually good, and companies typically release the best stuff up front to get you to buy (think movie previews), then odds are heavily in favor of the rest of the list being fairly bland.
  • Unless they come out with some bangers on there.......

Thats a no from me dawg

There are multiple substitues for the Nintendo classic editions as well and that didn't stop them from selling.  This will sell just fine.  We don't have enough official "classic editions" on the market to cause burn out yet (I say yet because I'm guessing we will get there in in few years if everyone else starts jumping on board).

The game list for the GameCube Classic is shit as well.  Not one single game announced that I would want to play.
  • I have an earthbound cart that has been sitting on a shelf untouched for years, quite literally collecting dust. That cart will be traded for this device, and I will be very happy with the exchange   regardless of what the other games are.
  • I'm saving my money for whenever we finally get a Virtual Boy Classic.
  • How many good games on that system didn't benefit from the analog sticks?

I only ever owned a PS1 after the analog sticks were standard... so not having them seems a bit lacking (though from a cost standpoint, i completely understand why they were skipped)
  • NO dual shocks is a stupid choice. They make some of the best games more enjoyable.

And some like Ape escape, which would have been a great choice to go on here, need it.

Hard pass for me. Especially since you can play most of these on the PS store on your PS3 with an actual dual shock controller.

  • I'm in. Just placed my pre-order.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sell the dual shocks for it separately as a cash grab.

  • I wonder if they are going to see how many preorders they get to estimate what their sales will be and then decide which games to put on the console. Different IP's got to have different costs. I don't think they're set on everything, I'm sure that $100 cost is high so they can move around some if the sales are lower on their range.

I wonder if theirs a way to petition for games?
  • I'm kind of surprised they wouldn't try to release it about 10 days earlier and go for those Black Friday sales. I'm sure it will still be a popular Christmas gift.
  • Can't find any pre-orders so far here in Canada.

The analog sticks came as a later addition in the playstation life cycle and even when they were a thing, a lot of games didn't support them.  Majority of games played just fine without them.

Yeah I don't see the big deal re: dualshock. Most games didn't support it, and those that did worked just fine without it.

  • Yeah - I mean, I'd *like* the analog sticks, sure, who wouldn't, but I don't think it will be a huge problem. I'm sure it helped cut costs - I like that it comes with two controllers, so that might have been the trade-off there. I imagine there will be some third party options available at some point also.
  • NO NAMCO JOGCON CONTROLLER SUPPORT FOR R4

    NO BUY HARD PASS

    F U SONY BALONY
  • In the video, there is a quick shot of the back of the unit showing the HDMI port. I noticed that they included the cover for the parallel port and it almost looks like it can be opened.

    Could be.

I didn't buy a PS1 until 1998, I think, and by then they dual shocks were standard equipment.

Thought I remembered them being necessary for games like MGS, though.

    MGS didn't require Dualshock, no.

Ape Escape was the ONLY game which required Dualshock. Many benefited, sure, but none but one required it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Resident Evil 2 Dualshock Edition. The main game didn't require it, but the added bits did.
  • Analog is obviously not on every game since it didn't come out until halfway through its lifespan, and yes you CAN play games fine without them.

The point is that for some of the top games on the system, it really helps. These are just off the top of my head but i know there are many more. And a good chunk of these should be on the classic as they are some of the greatest series on the system, except for maybe parasite eve and dino crisis.

    Resident evil series

    Dino crisis series

    Metal gear

    Spyro series

Crash 2 and 3 and CTR

Ape escape (highly underrated Ps1 game that would be great on the classic)

    Medievil series

    Parasite eve series

    Vagrant story
