The point is that for some of the top games on the system, it really helps. These are just off the top of my head but i know there are many more.

    Resident evil series

    Dino crisis series

    Metal gear

    Spyro series

Crash 2 and 3 and CTR

Ape escape (highly underrated Ps1 game that would be great on the classic)

    Medievil series

    Parasite eve series

    Vagrant story

I found the analog controls more of a hindrance than a help on games with tank controls. Maybe that's just me.

No i think it is likely a 50 split. Maybe not. Like i said, you CAN play the games fine, i personally just prefer the analog sticks.

The analog sticks came later addition in the playstation life cycle and even when they were a thing, a lot of games didn't support them.  Majority of games played just fine without them.

Yeah I don't see the big deal re: dualshock. Most games didn't support it, and those that did worked just fine without it.

    Could be.

I didn't buy a PS1 until 1998, I think, and by then they dual shocks were standard equipment.

Thought I remembered them being necessary for games like MGS, though.

    MGS didn't require Dualshock, no.

Ape Escape was the ONLY game which required Dualshock. Many benefited, sure, but none but one required it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Resident Evil 2 Dualshock Edition. The main game didn't require it, but the added bits did.

I must be thinking of MGS 2.

Would have sworn there was some puzzle with one of the bosses involving feeling vibrations in the controller -- but I'm probably just getting it mixed up with Psycho Mantis and the switching to controller 2.

  • Some games played better with it, some didn't. Crash 2 is a great example. The forward or backward traveling levels worked great with analog. The side scrolling levels were terrible with analog.

Resident Evil and Tomb Raider games are almost unplayable with analog. But a game like Metal Gear Solid would be a challenge without.

There is a part after the torture scene where they try to make you feel better by placing the controller on your arm and vibrating it.  It's a neat little 4th wall break, but not required in order to play/beat the game.

IF your controller has Dualshock, Mantis will prompt you to set your controller on the floor. He'll then make it "move" by having the controller vibrate (with his amazing psychokinetic powers).

  • I must be strange, because I almost always turned off vibration / rumble, for just about any game. I'm not really sure why, but I just never really enjoyed that. I'm not even saying this to defend the classic either - I just genuinely have zero interest in rumble features or vibrations on controllers for games. I get the intent and the whole immersion aspect of it, but for some reason it always felt strange to me.

The only game I ever ACTUALLY appreciated it on was Star Fox 64. I usually turn it off.

  • Do you think this is gonna include spyro and crash?

I mean with Activison putting out the crash trilogy last year and spyro this year I could see them opting out of this classic system.
  • When I saw the announcement this morning I was pretty excited, but not surprised.  I was wondering when Sony would jump on the retro bandwagon.

I'm a bit hyped for this, because nostalgia, but not really feeling the $100 price point.  Seems a bit high for me compared to what we're used to with Nintendo's offerings.  We'll see.  If its readily available at retail and easily hackable I'll probably jump onboard.
  • Probably they're looking for suggestions / feedback before announcing the final game list.
  • It would be cool if it would include the PS1 build of Ico.
  • I make zero judgement on this until I see a full game list, that is all that matters when it comes down to it.

If it doesn't have the right games, no buy.

People complaining about the games that are on it but will just leave it in the box too.

Yeah pretty much. I would hope to see the following, but who knows what they have in mind. As much as i love RPG's, i can understand why they may only have 3 or 4 on here.

    Metal Gear

    FF7, and FF8 or FF9

    Spyro 2 and maybe 3

    Medievil 2

    Soul Reaver

    Castlevania SOTN

Ape Escape (no dualshock though :/)

Resident Evil 2 and maybe 3

    Einhander

    Tenchu

    Xenogears

    Tekken 3

    Tomb raider 2 or 3

    Wild arms

    Spiderman

I could see these as all logical choices, with 20 games being pretty tight I'm not sure they will take the multi-game/single series route though.

Twisted Metal would be a good choice, I personally wouldn't care for it but I know lots of people used to play the shit out of it and it would appeal to the target audience.

Tomba would be a nice addition as well as a Tony Hawk game.

I had tony hawk but got rid of it since it isn't really sony exclusive.

Twisted metal is a great one to add as well. I forgot about that one. And tomba is another solid choice.

As for the multi game series, i agree they would have to choose one likely. Which is tough.

20 games is just so small when the library is filled with awesome titles. 30 would have been the sweet spot.

  • As long as Resident Evil and Twisted Metal are on it, I'll be buying it!
  • Twisted Metal 1 or 2 is a make or break decision for me. If it has it I will buy, if it doesn't I will pass. FFVII doesn't do it for me because I know the remake is coming in the next year or two anyway.

As for the comments about games you won't play, it's about pure value perspective from me. I knew the NES and SNES classics were easy buy and flips even if you didn't want it. That many games, cheap price and Nintendo? Sign me up. Then SNES was more expensive, but still solid games and 2 controllers.

Now PS1 wants to make it even more expensive and take out the charger? They are really going to need at least 7-8 stellar titles in the final 15 for this thing to hold value. Otherwise it'll probably sell out, scalpers will flip into the holidays and then it will have a hard time of holding $100 in the future.

The point isn't necessarily "why complain about games you won't play", my point is why buy at release if you won't play it, when I'm confident it'll be sub $100 after all hype wears off. There's not $100 in value here unless they jam pack the other 15 titles.
  • Capcom has pimped themselves pretty hard on retro releases lately, so I wouldn't be surprised if Super Puzzle Fighter 2 made the cut, to flesh out the puzzle game offerings.

If not for the lack of analog sticks, would have thought GT2 would be on there, but that is definitely a game I can't imagine playing without them.
  • I'll be opening it up the second it comes in. I don't see myself playing it a LOT - I mean, it isn't likely to be a main console for me - but it will be something fun for me and my friends to check out and have a little bit of nostalgia with, plus I like the small form factor just cause. So for me, I don't really care whether it will be $120 or $80 or $75 or whatever it may end up being a bit down the road. And on the flip side, it's fine if people don't wanna buy it or have no interest in this sort of thing. I mean, I get some of the discussion points and that's cool.

It's kinda fun to speculate around what the other games will be, and for people who don't want to pre-order so early, they can wait around and see if other titles are announced before they make their decision, so that's cool.
  • If they put 4-5 uncommon games say pick any four of: CSOTN, Einhander, Skull monkeys, R-Type Delta, Pink Panther, Adventures of Lomax, R-Types, Silhouette Mirage, Klonoa, Tomba, or Alundra

Then they could pick 8-10 games that were popular Twisted 2, MGS, Spyro, FF, Crash, RPGs, Tekken, etcetera,

They could still pick 6 games that are dog shit games and this thing would move. They would get people that are nostalgic who would pick it up immediately, then they would also get people talking about games that are great that they've never played before and get another surge of buyers.
  • FFVII and SOTN alone would make me buy it. Here's to hoping...
  • SOTN and Tenchu are on my list and Chrono Cross would be alright.
  • Scalpers, Suit up!!!

Just in time for the xmas rush no less.

Ide be surprised if this was not a NES Classic fiasco of two years prior in the making!

Yeah that is what i would think. With nintendo we pretty much knew the entire list of games ahead of time right? And the games PS listed here aren't really the cream of the crop. I mean FF7 is a given, but the rest i could live without. I mean wild arms over all the other RPG's they could have put instead to gain hype? Like xenogears, chrono cross, or even legend of dragoon.

I would hope they have room for feedback for the rest of the games. As the ones they are leading with are not the best choices. Of course this is just my opinion.

If i were to pick 5 games to lead the pack it would be some of the following.

    Metal Gear

    FF7

    Crash Bandicoot 2 or 3

    Twisted Metal 1 or 3

    Tekken 3

    Spyro 2 or 3

    Castlevania SOTN

I think Sony will learn from Nintendo did and produce enough to go around. They are trying to cash in on the mini hype, not create a collectable.
  • Preorder is up on amazon for those interested.

I doubt it.  The NES Classic was done to keep the Nintendo name hyped up through the holidays in anticipation for the Switch release the following March.  I'm not aware of anything similar for Sony, so it's in their best interest to keep the shelves stocked.

Yeah i doubt this will be good scalping material. Even the SNES classic was nowhere near as expensive or scalped as the NES classic.

I think there will be plenty of these to go around. But i preordered one just in case via amazon in case some new info comes out making me want it, and if not i will just sell here at cost to an NA member or cancel the preorder.

I could MAYBE see them selling out on launch day, a taking a week to stock back up.  If you are planning on scalping this, you better be prepared to turn it over in the first few days.  After that, you won't be able to sell it for enough to clear a profit after fees and shipping.
