Movie Lovers/DVD Collectors...apply here!

  Hello Folks,
I love movies. I have been collecting and watching movies/DVD's for quite some time now. Why is it cheaper to buy a used DVD from Gamestop than rent a movie from say, Blockbuster? It really pays to just own the DVD, than rent one. How many DVD's do you own and, what is your TOP 10 DVD's/Movies of all time?
I own about 450 DVD's...my father owns over 2,000 (that is sick!)
Here is mine:
1. Godfather
2. Blade Runner
3. Clockwork Orange
4. Shining
5. Shawshank Redemption
6. Scarface
7. Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark
8. Star Wars- Empire Strikes Back
9. Lord of the Rings- Return of the King
10. E.T.

  • I dont have alot of movies but I have a huge amount of mma dvds
Every UFC and Pride FC thats out plus most of the King of the Cages and a bunch of smaller orgs.
  • I just bought a complete Friday the 13th series and complete Halloween series. I love the classic horror flicks and prefer movies from the 70s to the 90s. Hitchcock is great too. Other than that I own concert DVDs and sporting events DVDs.
  •    Thanks guys for sharing your movie and DVD history. My father has all of the UFC DVD's as well, and I LOVE HORROR movies. My favorite movies are: original Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser, Reanimator, Saw, Birds, Psycho, Vertigo, The Hitcher (original), Pumpkinhead, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc...
  • Well DVD's just happen to be the other thing I have alot of besides NES games. Currently I have over 900 movies/TV dvd's with about 750 of them on DVD and about another 150 on VHS that I just can't find on DVD to replace them. Of those movies at least 450 of them are horror or ghost, etc type movies. I love horror movies and buy just about anything that comes out in the horror genre. Better believe I was at the first showing of the Halloween remake, my cell phone's ringtone is currently set to the Halloween music, and when I was at Universal Studios last month I bought THE MASK and a blue mechanic jumpsuit type outfit so that I can be Micheal Myers this year. LOL, little old for trick or treating but not for scaring the hell outta people.
  • Thats a sweet Myers costume you got. I wanted to buy one but the prices for movie prop ones are about $150-300! I saw Rob Zombies Halloween as well but I did not like it. I hated the way they depicted his family and the new mask was not that great either. It also had the worst ending out of all the series. I prefer the original and part 2 over any of them.
  • Well the originals are always the best... the first couple Friday the 13th movies are so awesome... but then it just got rediculous... same with Nightmare on Elm Street... and even Halloween. But Hollywood has to milk the known name for all they can. Just like Saw... I mean I will be there opening night to see Saw 4 but after my boy Angus McFayden (AKA Robert the Bruce from Braveheart who's auto'd 8X10 is sitting right here next to me) took Saw 3 to town it should be over... but yet of course here comes part 4 now.

Just like I always wondered how when Paramount sold the Friday the 13th rights to New Line Cinemas after number 8 how the hell Jason went from a dead little kid in the sewers of New York back to the grown monster in #9??????
  • I don't know exactly how many dvd's i have but it's around 70-80.

I have them all listed in Movie collectorz but I haven't installed it on this computer.

Movie Collectorz is a great program, you guys should check it out.

I like 80's movies alot, especially John Candy movies image

I haven't a top 10 list but it would contain a lot of 80's movies image
  • The Big Lebowski numbers 1 - 10

    Recognize

    MLN
  • Friday the 13th Jason goes to Hell was supposed to be that whoever he killed he would mutate into which did not make any sense? The first 3 were great and I also liked 4 & 8. I will go and see Saw 4 as well but not with high hopes though. It was like the Black Christmas remake last year, the 1975 movie on which Halloween was based on, the new one was terrible compared to the original thriller.
  • When I am searching in the wild for cheap video games I am always finding cheap dvds. I agree that it's more cost effective to buy dvds rather then rent them, you just gotta be willing to wait for the "new" stuff. If you have to see a new release the day it comes out for rental then you are forced to go the rental route. But if you wait 2-3 months then that same "new" release will start to show up for $3 in the pawn shops and flea markets. The "new" movies that I buy are "new" to me, they have just been out for awhile. image Also, if it's really that great of a movie then you should have gone and seen it in the movie theater, and if that's the case just wait that extra 2-3 months after it's rental release and you can own it! image All that aside I have around 600 dvds and my favorites off the top of my head are:

    1: Boogie Nights

    2: Hard Eight

    3: Magnolia

    4: True Romance

    5: A Clockwork Orange

    6: City of God

    7: Happiness

    8: Killing Zoe

    9: Goodfellas

    10: Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  • theres only one dvd worth owning the greatest movie of all time caddyshack
  • I really can't rank them but some favs:

    UHF (Wierd Al's movie entry)

    Dark City

Mystery Science Theaters: Pod People, Cave Dwellers (among others)

    Star Treks 2 & 6

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

    Batman Returns

    Ghostbusters

    Army of Darkness
  • I can't believe so few of you have anything listed beyond the last quarter century. I like my movies like I like my games: OLD! Here's my top 5:

1-The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

    2-King Kong (1933)

    3-Forbidden Zone (1980)

    4-The Wizard of Oz (1939)

5-A Trip to the Moon (1902)

And I love horror movies too, but only if they're made before (roughly) 1980. Someone actually mentioned Vertigo - good stuff!
