In jr. High shop class we did a unit on CO2 wooden cars. (I don't know if it's the same thing).
We had 2 weeks to design and build cars that would race against each other.
We all started with the same wood block and at race time, each car was fitted with the same CO2 cartridges at the starting line.
I made an itty bitty car that I painted to look like a bee.
Everybody busted my balls.
Definitely showed them though...
At the start of the first race, we hooked our cars onto their lines and stood back and watched the hammer drop and fire them off.
i made my car so light that the force of the CO2 ripped the car from the guiding line, it went airborne and smashed into a bunch of pieces at the far end of the hallway.
Got disqualified for making"an airplane" instead of "a car."
It was hilarious though.
Ah, a kindred spirit.
I don't know what wood you used in your class, but we started with balsa wood blocks, since then the kids could just file/sand them to shape without needing any cutting tools.
I sanded this super thin/sleek car... that promptly EXPLODED during the first race.
It was pretty great.
In terms of actual Pinewood Derby, I have a couple of trophies from cub scouts.
Made it look like the General Lee... And it didn't offend anyone
Funny coincidence , at the race i was at on sunday there was a car that was painted up as the general lee , confederate flag and all, i got such a kick out of seeing it i showed my daughter and nephew and said look the general lee !! they said "what ?' I said - the orange car with the flag on top from the dukes of hazzard. my daughter turned and said what are you talking about ? and then i felt old

hahaha... ouch
I'll have to see if I can find it. I'm 99% sure it's still around at my parents house SOMEWHERE. If I can find it I'll post it in here
My dad moved into a new place last fall and found the one car i made all those years ago and gave it to me... i took it home looked at it for a couple days and said to myself what am i going to do with this, i will never be racing this again and got rid of it... probably like a week later i got the flyer for the girl scout race and i felt like an idiot. they had a dad's race too and i could have raced my own car. what a dunce , that car made it almost 30 years in my dads attic and got trashed 1 week short of its true calling in life .
This years race is in a couple weeks and i started working on some new cars this year. will update along the way . Here are the 2 new cars i cut and drilled this weekend
I remember my first pinewood derby. I added lego stuff to it like a steering wheel and top half a minifig and cool fire on the side. I won best in show for design, but i didnt add weights so i didnt race too well. Didnt know it was allowed. I was only like 8 or 9.
Next year my second lego car was up to the weight limit and did very well
So here is a preview of this years car for the race on satuday. Still need to get a couple decals on and the wheels lubricated and installed tomorrow night.
i did pinewood from 1999 to 2016. axel polishing up to 200,000 grit (about 4 times finer than any wheel axel polish you will find on any pinewood sites) wheel bore buffing. even special lubes (that wasn't classified as a lube) i came up with that was better than oil. i got so good i was coming in first all the time. i finally retired out of pinewood.
i hand painted all my cars and they were usually all made with in a few days or less. unfortunatly we didnt get trophys for winning instead it was a 20 dollar gift certificate that could be used in the camp store. i usually ended up getting something for my mother and a candy bar for myself
heres my paint jobs. these were made near the end of doing pinewood. out of all of them the mario one was the most difficult to draw for me. and with limited time that makes it even harder lol. thank goodness my dad is a painter he was able to get all the colors accurate for me to use. when i was little he built the car for me but as i got older and more technical i did everything myself pretty much.
here my earlier cars (exept for the intel cpu car) (1999t left, 2010 right, in order)
nice to see some other cars in the thread, Love the bb8 car james!!
Thanks! That was the boy's idea. Spray painting was probably his favorite part of the process. Speed was pretty average. We finished middle of the pack.
What's up with those skinny wheels on some of your cars? Are they BSA?

Gotcha. Do you race in a league?
Nah. my racing was done in a private camp. there were no rules like bsa has.
Per our district BSA rules, "All cars must have four wheels." The fourth wheel spins freely and doesn't touch. The other three are canted to only ride on the edges. Pfff. Cheaters... Amirigt? .

TWarwick has a pic on page 2 of he and his daughter Mya..but now that you point it out, that is a great coincidental acronym
