Where does Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer stand?

Hello, iv’e been thinking a lot about the infamously rare Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer combo cartridge for the SNES. With that said in terms of rarity and in a collection where does it stand? Since it never really saw a retail release if it ever had one does it really count for a retail set because of its back story of being sold strictly to exercise facilities and at the NOA yard sale. Some say yes because it is a licensed SNES game BUT that would make this game count for a licensed SNES set instead instead of a retail set.  Now in terms of rarity i’ve herd tell this game is the “Stadium Events” of the SNES, but people have indicated this game isn’t even that hard to find cart sealed. So how can it be to the equivalent of the rarest game on the SNES when so many say it’s not? My guess is that the price sets people back from owning this piece because I would like to own this game one day however I’m not willing to shell out the cash for something like this..... maybe one day who knows. Does anyone know or can shed some light on any of this?

  • As a collectible, it's the second most expensive SNES game.

As a game, it's just a compilation of two uncommon games.

As far as where it belongs, it depends on the individual.

Me personally, I consider it part of the USA set along with Super Star Fox Weekend and Donkey Kong Country: Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II. If it was available even if only to a gym then it's been officially released by some standard. Similar to how Super Star Fox Weekend and DKC: Competition were mail order only.
  • Just a combo cart of two terrible games. Don't waste your money on that one

Yeah it should stand right on top of the GARBY.

In that case Stadium Events would be better? I’m looking for a showcase game for my collection plus I’m looking into being a completist at some point

Stadium Events is more recognizable (at least among casual collectors) to ooh and ahh over, but it'll cost you a lot more.

Which system means more to you, SNES or NES?

  • Love how common they are sealed

Both but honestly SNES means a little bit more to me

Then it depends on how you define a collection. If retail, you could probably skip it, though it was available for public use in at least one form. For licensed set, I think most count it. Or at least more than they would the M.A.C.S. carts which were only available if you were in the military.

Though that one came with a badass rifle, which would catch the eye of anyone no matter what their interest in collecting would be.

No, not at all. They found a crate of them never sold or something. At one point there were 4 or 5 of them all on eBay I took a screenie of. Same story with Bronkie if you've noticed how common those are sealed

  • It's got a seal of quality, UPC, CIB release and everything. I don't think it's nearly as exceptional as something like Star Fox Super Weekend (I don't think selling used loose copies counts as being "released") or MACS. Even its rare exercise game analogue Outback Joey doesn't say "Sega Genesis" on it, it says "for the HeartBeat system" if you really want to argue that's not part of the Genesis set.

Ultimately you decide what "counts" for the set you want. At the extreme end of the spectrum, if everything counts, then Powerfest and Campus Challenge count.
  • At the extreme spectrum yes, but those are all competition cartridges as well. Same with Star Fox Super Weekend and Donkey Kong Competition so why are these being factored in with Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer? Yes it is a licensed game and so are the competition carts as well but the comp carts are practically in a league of there own especially since everyone is separating MACS aside from everything els. Strictly my opinion here but I've come to the conclusion that Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer counts as a licensed set but not for a retail set and everything els including the Competition carts and MACS is just extra unless your going for everything.

Back in the day you could purchase them through a catalog.

  • I think it falls under retail and licensed sets as it did have a UPC and could be acquired through the retailer/manufacturer Life fitness. So if you're wanting a full set for SNES I'd say you need this in my opinion. But each person has their own collecting goals so totally up to you. I wouldn't say it's rarer than Star Fox or DKC competition carts
