    I don't think it's a bad game. A bit brutal at times.

Nothing unforgiving or poorly designed though. And they give you TONS of free lives, plus you can revive Han and Leia indefinitely with Obi-Wan plus you get 10 continues on top of that so you can try any challenging spot many times to figure it out.

I think Bad News Baseball is fun. Certainly way better than Tecmo Baseball which is surprisingly bad given how good Tecmo sports games normally were.

Empire Strikes Back definitely seems like a bad game. I bet you wouldn't enjoy that one, if you haven't played it already.

Bad News Baseball isn't totally bad. There is a lot of charm to it. The pitching and batting are fine. The fielding is totally garbage to the point that it is so bad it overwhelms all the positive things about the game.

I'm planning to play Empire Strikes Back next!
  • Street Cop is done! My favorite Power Pad game so far, though I know that's not saying much.   I had a good time!

It's inventive. Definitely a nice change of pace from the track meet/exercise sims that were the majority of the other Power Pad games.

  • Demon Sword is beaten.

Kind of an odd game. A below-average side-scroller IMO, but not a bad game overall.

Interesting that this one is worth 9. It's not that difficult, not very long, and the cart is pretty common. I'll take it.

Also thought it was odd that neither NintendoComplete or World of Longplays have a playthrough video of this game on their YouTube channels. I wonder why.

I played and beat star wars tonight just for fun. I checked to make sure it was done here and was thrilled to see someone else appreciates it. One of my favorite games ever made and such a rewarding beat.

I definitely wouldn't put it in my "favorite games ever" catergory, but it surprised the heck out of me how much I did like it. I put quite a bit of time into Empire Strikes Back tonight and it's not nearly as good unfortunately. Hoping to have that one beat tomorrow.

Just one of those games that no one ever really cared much about, I guess. I'm surprised it's only a 4 for rarity, but there does seem to be a lot of copies on Ebay.

  • Empire Strikes Back is done. The actual gameplay isn't terrible, although a bit hard, and the sprites are pretty good for the most part. But the sound is just gross. Not 1942 bad, but one of the closest I've found. And for some stupid reason they take these iconic moments from the movie and then do the opposite of them. Pretty bold to think you can improve Empire Strikes Back's narrative.

Well done!  I'm definitely envious of your completion rate.  I have a hard time getting time to myself to play NES.  If I can beat one game a week I'm feeling pretty good about it!

Im pretty happy to be back to putting a lot of time into my NES collection again. I was doing this pace from like 2011-2013 and then I started a second job and then had a second kid in 2015. It was too much after a while so I dropped one of the jobs and can now do the stuff I love more often (playing NES for example) and I'm enjoying it so much. I'm coming up on my 400th game beaten and I'm ridiculously excited for that.

Don't sell yourself short though. I've been watching your progress also and some of the games you've beaten are no easy feat. High Speed, Dirty Harry, Smash TV can be brutal. I haven't done Smash TV yet myself, but those other two took a big time investment to get through. When you beat a game like those do you feel oddly attached to it sometimes? There are games that I know are just awful, but I kind of like them after I beat them sometimes where I definitely dislikes them before that process.

I'm just happy that I'm able to play these games at all.  I don't mind when one game takes a big commitment to figure out, just as long as I'm able to get the time to make progress.  I haven't been able to play NES since Saturday and I'm starting to get antsy.  But I will get through all these games eventually!

I was wondering how far along you were, wow, almost 400 games!

I have definitely grown attached to bad games.  Something akin to video game Stockholm syndrome.  I'll go to bat for Ikari Warriors any day, as an example, even though that game inflicted so many frustrating hours of failures before I achieved that sweet, sweet victory.

Not a question to me, but damn, yes.

I usually tend to grow attached to even bad games after a while. I'm actually surprised sometimes when someone beats a game, which usually takes some time, patience and effort, to see them see they really hate the game afterwards.
  • For me it really depends on the game. I think a lot of "bad" games aren't really bad -- they just have a severe learning curve, unintuitive (but consistent) controls, and/or quirks that need to be managed. Get past those things, and there's actual, worthwhile gameplay to be had there.

One big thing for me is whether a game can be meaningfully mastered. That experience is almost always satisfying even if the game isn't "good". But if I feel my success is heavily dependent on RNG -- and, especially, if that RNG event happens at the end of a large time investment -- then I tend to hate the game (hello, Back to the Future). Or if a game is inconsistent in its behavior, that drives me nuts too.

Basically I just don't like feeling like a game is deliberately wasting my time to extend its shelf life. Mastering a game is one thing, but replaying it 100x to get the one favorable RNG that allows you to beat it is a waste of a human being's limited time on earth.

^^Perfectly stated. I could not agree more, and that is exactly how I feel.

  • Karnov is done.

Full playthrough here in case anyone is interested: http://tinyurl.com/glovesbeatskarnovnes

  • Adulthood has been getting in the way of my gaming! But I did want to add that I have sentiments very similar to what several of y'all have been saying about getting attached to bad games once you put in the time to learn how to beat them. I'd especially like to second Arn's reference to Stockholm Syndrome. I've cleared so many games for this thread where I said, "Well, once was more than enough for this lifetime." And then when that game is still on this list in March of the next year, I'm suddenly thinking "Hmm... I'd like to play that one again."

Your point about RNG is very true for most games I think. It can really make an otherwise enjoyable time very frustrating.

@Svankmajer - totally! There are instances where I feel that way, like Back to the Future II & III for example, in which I finished the game and still felt very sour about the experience. But even objectively bad games like Athena, which I recently finished, I feel this strange sense of accopmlishment and pleasure about my time with it.

Anyway I finished Defenders of Dynatron City tonight which is one that I have failed at in the past so it feels pretty good to cross off my list. Some bad hit detection and music, but otherwise an interesting game.

  • Ghostbusters is done.

And with this, I claim two records:

    1) I've eclipsed my all-time record set last year for most licensed completions in a year.

    and

    2) I've topped Bea's 2015-2016 run for best two-year point total.

I've also gone over the 500 point mark for the third time. (Which is also probably a record, but I'm not 100% sure...)

Conglaturation you have completed a great game!

Did you use a turbo controller, the door/lives glitch or both?

  • Turbo controllers are expressly forbidden in the rules of this competition. I exploited the door/lives glitch. I can't even imagine what it would take to beat this one 100% legit. I probably got hit 100 times on my way up those damn stairs.

But the important part is that I have prooved the justice of our culture. Now I must go and rest (our heroes). But seriously, I have work at 6 AM and I'm going to bed.
  • Swamp Thing is finished. Was hoping I'd like it more, because I do like the character. But it wasn't great

Yeah, that's another interesting property with potential that THQ unfortunately got the rights to make.

  • It was made by Imagineering and published by THQ. It was made by the same developer as the NES Simpsons games and uses the same engine. I've never played either but they're supposed to have an awkward control setup.
  • That's too funny. I remember thinking a few times during the game that the item pick ups sounded like they do in Bart vs the World (which I played a lot of as a kid). Makes sense in retrospect because of the "hold your jump button to run" mechanic which is very weird and very NES Simpsons.
