What's the easiest system to collect 100% all games for it?

I've been going for the complete GB set for a couple years now.  I chose it because though it wasn't my favorite system as a kid, it did have some of my favorite titles (Final Fantasy Adventure, Duck Tales and Link's Awakening, just to name a few.) Selecting to go for a complete set of carts for this system was a bit arbitrary because at the time, I liked the system and it seemed kind of "easy" compared to, say, the NES.

Now, after being experienced in this area a good bit more, I'd possibly consider going for a different set.  I'm not thinking of backing out but it does make me curious, of the many systems out there with a fair sized library (100+ games) which ones are the easiest collect for and complete.  In other words, which ones are you not going to die in the hell that is finding the super rare/obscure stuff that might not be worth much but is impossible to find?

  • I would say Wii U is the easiest to collect for right now.
  • Probably N64, if I had to guess. Especially if you just want cart-only, and assuming you don't consider NFR games as part of the set (I believe most do not).

GVN has a loose set at just over $4000, which is a pittance.

EDIT: Ah yeah, the Wii U. I mean, yeah it's probably pretty easy all things considered lol. Though I do believe some games are REALLY hard to find? Some really dumb exclusives that were only sold in like... golf clubs or something?

He specifies systems with 100+ games.

  • Wii U and N64 are pretty solid. I remember Croods and Turbo were tough on Wii U but that whole set is probably BINable on Ebay in literally an hour at market value.

It's funny in a way when systems get more popular it gets easier to find the rare stuff. Xbox has virtually zero truly rare games, but one of the few rare games like IHRA Sportsman Edition has multiple copies on Ebay since so many people know it's rare now. That's probably the easiest set with ~1000 games, which is the main reason it's at all desirable to collect

Coleco Telstar Arcade is four games. Good luck finding cartridge #4, though.

Mattel Hyperscan is five games. Probably the easiest if you don't count all the scan cards that the system used.

For 100+ games, I'd say N64, since none of the games are ridiculously rare.

I can't remember if Intellivision or Colecovision had any super rare games. At least not the "only two known copies exist" types that plague Atari 2600. Edit: looks like Intellivision has a couple of $100+ games, but copies were on the Bay.

For 50 or more games, maybe Atari 5200?
  • I don't know if you have any love for Game Gear, but I was looking at the GG set the other day, looks like an easy version of the GB set. GVN says there are 232 games, (my personal list has 234, I'll have to work out the discrepancy) for a total loose value of just over 2k. EZPZ. I'm already 10% of the way there, largely by accident.

Edit: annnnd I just looked over your want list from your FS post, looks like you might already be collecting GG.

Hey man, quit ripping on Xbox! I'm really getting into it from a gaming perspective right now, with awesome games, cheap prices, a huge library, and modern-ish game design and looks, it's a great package! Sure, I can understand from a collecting point of view it's not so interesting but... Games are meant to be played!

Also, yeah, pretty much N64 or Wii U... maybe also Dreamcast?
  • N64 is easy
  • I'll parrot N64 and Xbox.

But the Master System Set is somewhat of an easy eBay Set. Local is a different story. Goldenaxe Warrior, and James Buster Douglas Boxing are the only expensive loose games in the Set, and I think there aren't even 10 games CIB above $100.
  • Thanks guys for these answers!  My completionist self is already thinking of “round 2” and I had considered the N64.

Lol, yeah, that’s a slow burn.  I have quite a few games for someone not going for a set (yet!) but I might if I can knock out +50% for dirt cheap.  I slowly buy up low valued lots consisting of games I don’t yet own, so I’ll probably go for this one too.

  • I agree that Master System is the answer you're looking for if the minimum requirement is 100 games and you're a cart only collector. If you go to CIB that set does amp up a bit in difficulty but not too bad.

I've been having this thought as well. Do we have a solid list of the 100% (US) titles? Is the NA database updated and correct? I'm curious how many unique titles were released in the US.

164 if I’m not mistaken. Also Limited Run Games is suppose to be releasing a game this month.

Unfortunately a few games for the system are quite rare and have skyrocketed in price. It took me over 2 years to find a copy of Pete Sampras Tennis. And I still paid out the ass for it.

yeah, actually one thing that holds me back is that there are games I already own on Switch - BOTW, Mario Kart 8, AND YES Axiom Verge, etc that I'm not sure I'd want to rebuy on Wii U.

Colecovision would be easier than Intellivision.   Or you could go 5200 or 7800, only one $100+ title on each at the moment.

  • Loose Gameboy Color. Literally one game will cost over 100. Theres about 5 or 6 over 50, the rest are pennies

I've noticed the skyrocketing.  IMHO, I think the GG will continue to be "reasonable" because there's just no easy way to play these games.  Older GGs need recap jobs and, let's be honest, those original screens haven't aged well.  A McWill upgrade will set you back a good bit too and, honestly, I don't like that option because the pixel depth doesn't match that of the original unit.

Regardless, if I do go for a GG set (or any other) what I've learned from going after a Game Boy set is that start with the hardest titles to find.  This takes research because there are some $10-20 games that rarely show up, much less in the condtion that I'd prefer to have those games in.  If I could find a a copy of Pete Sampras (I saw a CIB copy, IIRC, on eBay over a year ago and that was it) I'd probably consider working on the GG set more earnestly because I know that's a tough one to find.

Also, regarding cart vs. CIB sets, my general rule is that if a game came in a case meant to be kept (aka. a plastic clamshell or jewel case) I want that game CIB.  Otherwise, if it came in cardboard that was meant to be discarded, then I don't want it.  I mean, those items are cool.  I have mad respect for you guys with complete CIB sets for the Nintendo, SNES, etc. but to me that's just money tied up in paper that I can potentially play with.

I've also considered getting into smaller systems.  There's a complete CIB set, for instance, of VB right now on eBay.  I considered selling off some of my final BTC holdings and grabbing it and possibly selling off the paper one piece at time, but that's to easy.  I do want a complete VB set, but there's also some fun hunting/collecting this stuff.  Still, when you're at the end of your run but you have 100+ titles to go and some of them as simply hard to find, it get's tough.  I'm motivated but, yeah, you learn.  Completionist collecting isn't for the faint of heart, even if you have the cash to make it happen over the course of 4-5 years.

  • Definitely Wii U
  • the switch or wii u
  • I would say either N64 or Wii U.

I would also say Master System, but only if you count PAL copies as an alternative for the rare US games. It's a relatively small library (but still over 100 games) and every rare/uncommon game has an easy to find PAL version. If you insist on all games being US versions, than I would say the system would be much more difficult to collect for.

I like the MS, but I’d probably never go for a complete set.  What I like is that Brazil managed to get a lot of GG titles ported to is so I can play a few of the games I loved as a kid on a CRT.

I'm pretty much the same.  There was a time I wanted to get a full US set (using PAL versions of the hard to find US games), but I've sort of given up on that.  Getting the MS Everdrive was a great purchase because it allows me to play some of the unusual Brazil games that you never would have guess they ported to the system (like Earthworm Jim).

The difference between our lists is Bayonetta 1.

I didn't count it since it came with Bayonetta 2 (I know there was a second print without it but I never put it alone on my list).

  • Then that means you would excluded star fox guard as well? (That comes with a separate case and not sold New unless you consider GameStop that's sells it used)

I think about it years from now when someone finds it loose (if loose disc sets ever become a thing)
