The 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 Nintendo Power Calendar Set

I had an opportunity to buy this set recently and jumped at the opportunity.  For those not aware, the 1990 calendar is common, the 1991 is a bit uncommon, 1992 is fairly rare and 1993 is practically unheard of.  Many people who casually pay attention don't even know the 1993 exists (myself included for the first few years of collecting games).  Glad to join the owners club!

Also, shout out to Spoonman who documented these years ago and started my appreciation for the rarity of the 1993 issue.  He did have to settle for a UK copy (different UPC / same artwork), further reiterating the rarity of the USA issue.  His old thread here if anyone was curious http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=62061

Anyone else collect these or own the set besides Spoonman?  It's a real nostalgic kick to flip through the pages and see what was included back then.

Or you can get one of those nautical brass calendars.
  • Those calnendars look to be in great shape. It would definitely be cool to have them. I believe I have the 1991 calendar. How long did it take you to complete the set and did you find them all online?
  • Pretty cool!

So did these have to be ordered through Nintendo Power magazine, or were they sold at retail? I'm guessing since '92 & '93 are so rare that these weren't included with subscriptions?

Yeah, but that's by chance.   Calendars repeat every 17 years, so I was going off of 34 years after 1991 (since I completely missed the 1990).

Make sure you write your appointments in ball point pen!

Several years ago I got the 1990, 1991 and 1992 calendars but then sold them off after giving up on the 1993.  Then coincidentally I found the entire set for sale recently and had to purchase them all together

It's a set that takes a lot of patience to piece together, that's for sure!
  • Have had the set for several years. When I first got it no one was really buying this kind of stuff up. Walked away with the 4 and a bunch of other merchandise just like it including new never folded cereal boxes. Very cool!
  • I've owned the 1990 since i was a kid. Recently acquired the 1991 randomly. Would love the other two as well, but I'm not actively seeking them.

Does the 1993 have any Metroid months like the previous years?

Thanks to Spoonman for having scans of each month, but yes it looks like June 1993 features Samus from Metroid II:

  • I just had to ask.....now I'll probably drive myself crazy tracking the other two down! haha
  • Nicely done Jone!

I am waiting for a decent 1993 copy myself to finish... such a pain to find!
  • My brother has both 1992 and 1993. I guess I'd be in the minority in this club, since 93 just has the feel of commonplace to me, having seen it in my brothers room many times over the years.

About the history, we never had a subscription to Nintendo Power growing up, likewise I don't remember tons of Nintendo merchandise being available for sale in our neck of the woods , back in the day.

I think these either were bought at school book fairs or from school book orders.
  • I had 1991 at the time. /\ I also did not have the magazine.

I want them. I've been keeping my eye out. I'm more interested in the first two but I sure wouldn't turn down a whole set like you got, Jone! Nice score. To me, the different artist interpretations of the games were fascinating and a little weird. I feel that with a lot of the early merch, but it's especially prevalent here with the number of images, and really stands out to me because of the pixelated style.
  • I feel like I actually got mine at the school book fair or those sheets they passed around at school.
  • Wow...those things are pretty baller. Nicely done grabbing them!
  • Why does Samus look like an old-timey scuba diver?! LOL'd hard at that! Very interesting interpretation of the character, based on the crude original sprite art. Reminds me of the mega man boxart, lol!
  • I love how in the 1990 December art, they have the commonly misread sprite for Zelda 2. See if you can notice anything wrong here:

  • I want the '91 only because that's the year I was born so it would be kinda neat to have that.
  • Those are awesome! These are an example of something I completely forgot about, which is why this site is great. I definitely remember '90.
  • Pretty neat. Love learning something new. Nice

    score!!!!
  • Very nice! I never knew that there was a US 1993 version. I've got the set, too, but with the UK 1993 version. I've had the 1990 and 1991 calendars since the 90s and acquired the 1992 and 1993 calendars about five years ago. Have been meaning to get them framed / create a wall display as they are so vibrant.
  • I still have my '90 from when I was a kid. Has important dates like my mom's birthday and whatnot marked in it.

Hey congrats man! Looks like you hit the jackpot there!

This post must be why I've gotten a couple of emails asking if I was going to add photos for the 1992 calendar.

I guess I should add that sometime. I wish I had a larger flatbed scanner so properly scan them.

Hey, now that you have a USA 1993 calendar, have you noticed any differences from the UK version? Aside from the company and credits on the back (Danilo), "Produced in the United Kingdom", and "Printed by Danilo Printing Limited London England E14 England" of course.

They are definitely interesting and unique. I really loved owning them back in the day. My originals weren't in the best of shape. I marked them all up, and my order brother, during a fight ripped the entire thing in half!

I ended up replacing that with a NOS version, and my others were pretty much unused. By 1991 I had entered my OCD collector period.

Someone actually made me an offer and bought my beat up, written on, ripped and taped up version.
