What is the age cutoff for saying "Portables" instead of "Handhelds"?

As far as gaming is concerned, I think any sort of system or game which can easily (and literally) be held in your hands should be considered a "handheld," regardless of vintage.

I agree with this, I didn't realize these terms were the same thing. I consider an NES and SNES to be portable because I can easily pick them up and transport them. They obviously aren't handhelds.
  • Well as an example I always thought of the Game Gear as a "backpack portable".
  • Lol! I love these "slow news day" threads on NA.   I would suggest adding a poll, but reading through the comments already seems to indicate overwhelmingly which way it would go.
  • Every console is portable if you have a generator and a can of gas

    I came

Um, I mean, I came to say this. ""Handheld power" just doesn't have the same ring.
  • I dunno that there's an age cutoff for this? I use both terms interchangeably but I probably say handheld 80-90% of the time.
  • PSP : "Playstation Handheld."
  • So...30?
  • Hmmmmm...

  • The Gamecube was built with a 'hand'le. Does that make it a 'hand'held or a portable?
  • I really dont understand because portable is describing strictly an attribute while handheld is describing a system that fits in your hand

  • in the ham radio world, a "mobile" radio is one that you install in your car, and a "handheld" is the kind you... hold in your hand. So maybe the Gamecube and Virtual Boy count as "mobile" consoles.
  • I don't need no hand holdin to know how to play video games!

+1 the way all search engines are Google
  • Never heard the term portables and I own a game store. Perhaps it is a regional thing.
  • Ring practical about it if you can fully use it In your hand or hands it is a handheld from gameboy to a tablet/phone. But if you can carry it around for use it have to let it go to do that it clearly is a portable.
