I'm not picking on you, but I see this WAAAAAY too often.  So many people say they have no interest in the PS4 because they don't like first person shooters.  I own over 200 PS4 titles and less than a dozen of those are FPS games, and most of those aren't even "modern style" FPS like CoD.  The PS4 probably has best variety of game styles of any console since the SNES era.

Unless that means the actual discs, NOT just whatever they feel like hosting at the PS Store or whatever, then that does NOT count.

I'd bet money it means "you can buy it from us again", not "you can play the discs you own"

Yea but you can transfer those to another service like vudu.

Ugh, sorry.  I've just seen too many people complain about the PS4 only offering first person shooters and sports games.

(That's part of the reason why I wasn't trying to specifically call you out, but just offer an FYI   )

  • That brings up something interesting actually. Usually the cartridge based stuff and nintendo branding hold up in value better than cd based games, but with the PS4 LRG games having lower print runs than Switch counterparts of many games and the ps4 overall having a better frame rate, I wonder if the PS4 LRG's might hold their value better than expected compared to Switch.

I think if the PS5 is atleast backward compatible to the PS4 that will lower the amount of ports.
  • Meh, that is all.
  • My predictions for next gen:

It's the 90s all over again with way too many runners in the race. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Google, Apple, and Facebook are all gearing up to be the next generations race.

    Nintendo

Will fully discontinue the 3DS. Switch will get a new XL and Mini but still similar in size to current gen in order to have accessory compatibility. Will have a "Switch Plus" maybe three years from now as a hardware upgrade similar to Wii is to Wii U. VR may become a thing for them as they have some patents.

    Sony

Following Nintendo's success will have a PS5 Portable and the dock will give it more power to push out 4K content.

    Microsoft Xbox One Up

Will have to work the hardest as this generations "loser" in some ways. Likely will just up their specs and they will heavily market VR.

    Google

Will probably be a surprise success in its own way. This will become the new "casual" gaming platform...a much bigger platform than "hardcore" gaming.

    Apple

Read google. This will become its own category much like how mini-consoles (Ouya, Gamestick, etc.)

    Facebook

Oculus will try to make an impact with its own dedicated platform. It will fail.

    Surprise Visitor: Amazon

Amazon will beef up the fire stick and integrate it with Alexa. It might work but will be the lesser of the new generation.

    Surprise Visitor: Samsung

Will be a part of the Galaxy lineup. Won't go anywhere beyond the Korean market.

    Surprise Visitor: Hauwei

Will be a hit in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Companies like Tencent might release some exclusive games actually worth playing.

    Surprise Loser: PC Gaming

PC market is growing stagnant. Too many distribution platforms and not enough quality games. Hardware is growing too expensive and has become a turnoff. RGB is getting tacky and they're running out of gimmicks to upgrade PCs for. Games are mostly Free To Play nonsense and there are no more great AAA exclusives anymore.

    Surprise Industry Movement:

The entire industry will pivot to casual gaming and digital distribution. Dedicated consoles like Xbox and PS5 will be, and already are weak in comparison to the numbers generated by casual gamers.

    Surprise Industry Movement 2:

With the success of Spider-Man, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other various story driven single player games Sony will push harder into the market possibly encouraging less online games. They will likely end up the leader yet again next generation for hardcore gamers.

I also would not be a day one buyer of something that lacked physical media.  I'm not sure what next gen console I would buy next but I'd pass if both released as digital only.

At some point digital only consoles are inevitable. The cost savings are too great to ignore, and your average buyers are moving towards not giving a shit, especially if they play the game once and forget it exists once they've completed it.

At one time the argument was disc were going to kill off the cartridge... and Switch still uses cartridges.   If we're talking decades from now, maybe all digital by then, but we'd all be in retirement age.  If you look at the near term 5-7 window, I don't see us getting there yet.

Remember, last generation Xbox said they were doing a discless console, got a LOT of flak and changed their mind.  I get them wanting to test a digital only console now (while still having a physical option in that generation too), but time will tell.

Also, cost savings only matter if passed to the consumer.  If you can buy a physical version at $300 or the digital only console at $200, maybe you think about it.  But if they just try to force the digital only version to you at $300, no one would want that.

Many people would consider the initial $100 savings as pointless considering the used game market. Make that back in no-time, AND have the option to sell all your shit? Bro I WISH I could sell the hundreds of games attached to my PSN account.

  • Only 4 more generations to go!

  • Sold

Sony already has the best collection of first party titles alongside Nintendo, so it is an easy buy for the exclusives alone. And with killer 3rd party stuff like Cyberpunk being cross-gen/next gen, it is a no brainer.

Not expecting a huge overhaul in graphics. I think they are going to focus more on performance, hitting that solid 60fps, buttery native 4k, as well more power under the hood, and an improved version of Playstation VR.

Backwards compatibility is a bit overrated, don't think it is quite the selling point people make it out to be. I played a PS1 game on my PS3 like twice. Those picking up a PS5 want to play PS5 games on it first and foremost.

I will admit having the ability to play games PS1-PS5 would be an amazing feat and give us a massive library of games like no one has ever seen.

Unless I missed it, no one claimed it was a big selling point for Sony overall, but several of us said it would be a big selling point for ourselves.  If the PS5 is fully backwards compatible with PS1-PS4 discs, than I would probably buy one at launch.  Otherwise, there is a good chance I wouldn't buy one at all.  I can't say it any simpler than that.

I don't know...I think it would be bigger than you think.  All the PS4 owners would definitely consider it as a PS4/PS5 powerhouse...then traditional consumers would feed off of this feature in comparing it to the Xbox...collectors would have boners all over the world if it played PS1-PS4 discs.  Add in enhanced VR like you said and I think it could be a NBA Jam flipping through the air slam dunk for Sony.

However, based on how Xbox is already semi-supporting this - I expect them to follow suit and pump up their support to full Xbox/360/XB1 libraries as well.  I can see Microsoft getting into the VR game too.

Good times ahead for gamers, that's for sure.

  • I'd say backwards compatibility matters more now than ever before. In prior generations the technological jump was much more significant. You went to the next generation if you wanted the best and new games. Now it's a lot more subtle and many would be content staying in the current generation instead of moving to the next. PS5 almost has to be BC with PS4 just to try and get people on the fence to upgrade. You're trying to nudge some of those "okay with the PS4" mentalities into the next gen, and one way to do that is by still allowing them to play the existing library on the next gen hardware.

    You're crazy.

If anything XBox eventually flips their model to just be out-of-the-box gaming PCs with a marketplace for finely-tuned installs that don't require any tinkering to optimize.

But PC gaming isn't going anywhere.  It is the single most accessible and lowest cost platform for independent developers/distributors and likely always will be, owing to the competition across distribution channels that simply doesn't exist on other systems.

Well, I think he was suggesting that Steam / GOG / Epic / Origin / Amazon / Windows-Apps / etc fracture the marketplace in a destructive way.

But that isn't really how PC gaming works, or what PC developers care about.  They want as many avenues to your wallet as possible, so more options (for people to choose their DRM preferences and achievement libraries) is really only beneficial to them.

Given how XBox controllers already tie into Windows, and how much library commonality already exists, it really doesn't strike me as a stretch for Microsoft to EVENTUALLY go down that road of just selling gaming PCs with a marketplace where they get a cut and the games are all confirmed as optimally tuned out-of-the-box.

No idea what "RGB is getting tacky..." is supposed to mean, though

This will make for an interesting first-test of what a digital distribution platform collapse looks like, if they don't turn it around.

(guess it's also a reminder to go back up everything I have with them  )

I wouldn't say they're a bad platform from the customer side, though.  It is just that their "hook" is DRM-free, versus Steam that has an achievement system to spur interest in finding replay value in your library.  (Valve also does those silly steam trading cards that are pure gravy for them)

FYI GOG has an achievement system as well.

Guess I haven't kept up, if that is the case.  I'm assuming it requires their GOG Galaxy interface, though, which defeats most of the purpose of using GOG for me

I mostly use GOG for the back catalog of pre-configured DOS emulators (Master of Magic, UFO Defense, Wizardry, Might and Magic, etc).

(i.e. legally accessible former "abandonware", which is what the platform was originally created for)

  • GoG also denies a LOT of games. I can see why developers didn't keep pursuing that platform. Basically if you're not releasing a AAA title DRM free, they didn't want you.

I can understand not being quite as open a platform as Steam, as Steam has boatloads of garbage content, along with the good games.

Sounds like they put up too high a wall, though.

Steam had garbage due to Greenlight and anyone being able to spam votes. GoG was hand reviewed by their staff. Basically, if their staff didn’t approve of the kind of game you made, then you weren’t getting on. Period.
