  • after looking at the list, i think I'll give Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja another run.
  • Beat Young Indiana Jones Chronicles tonight. Kinda like this one, it wasn't bad.

  • Beat Robin Hood Prince of Thieves today. What a bizzare game.

    image
  • Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six is beat.

    Not a very good game.
  • Krusty's Fun House is done:

This has to be one of the most unnecessarily arduous games I've played in a while. If they'd just had a dynamic password system that recorded each level as you beat it, this could have been a fun game to chip away at. Instead, with a paltry four hardcoded passwords, you have to commit to 90-120 minutes of gameplay even if you know how to beat all the levels in that area.
  • I beat Blaster Master (for the first time). It's a joke that this game has to been done in one go with limited continues. No matter how good it is, the main thing I'll remember about it is what a GRUELING MARATHON it was.

People complain about Ninja Gaiden sending you back like 5 minutes, how about losing 3 hours in Blaster Master!
  • Conan is done:

Did folks know that you can kneel in front of the snake-woman in the second level, and she'll disappear and give you a health pickup?

Also: is there any clue in the game about the order in which you're supposed to place the urns, or is it meant to be 100% trial and error?

    Congrats on beating Blaster Master!

Once you have figure out where to go, it’s more like an hour & 15 minutes.  But point taken on it being punishing since it’s a longer game w/limited continues. I certainly agree with ya that Blaster Master is a challenge. Definitely tougher overall than Ninja Gaiden, as you pointed out (a lot of games are harder than NG, IMO).

The keys for me that made the game more manageable (outside of knowing where to go) were utilizing the “strafe” in the top-down areas and boss battles, and making sure you go into every boss room with full health (I.e. a fully powered up gun).

You can easily lose hours to Ninja Gaiden if you suck at the later levels.

At least in NG you’re practicing a short, toughest part of the game. I never want to play areas 1-6 of BM again, it takes a couple hours!

I kid, BM is actually a pretty wicked game. It definitely seems like it will be a lot of fun to replay once you really know where to go at every step. It just turns my thinking upside down because Metroid-like games I think of as a beat once and I’m good game, but Blaster Master is set up as a game you’re really supposed to master it and play again and again like a Ninja Gaiden. Maybe once I’m over the mental block of how daunting it is I’ll come back in a couple weeks and see if I can get those hour and 15 minute runs in.

Yes, my hubris of not grinding up my gun (or thinking I wouldn’t be able to carry it all the way to the boss) screwed me the first few times I played, especially the long armed crab boss.
  • I was making a lot of progress and was about halfway through DW3, then I decided I wanted to do a solo playthrough with a non-hero character. So...now I'm doing that. With any luck, should be finished later this week, my first time attempting this!
  • Beat Power Punch II tonight. That last boss took me as much time as the rest of the game combined. Whatever little joy I sapped out of the first 3 circuits were totally destroyed by that last fight. No fun at all!

  • I've been working on Captain America & the Avengers. Holy hell what a tedious chore this game is...
  • Started working on Michael Andretti's World GP..... it's gonna be a while.....
  • I've got two worlds left in Boulder Dash. Spent an hour last night working on just one world, after I had already practiced the levels some. Next update is when it's over
  • Captain America and the Avengers is beat. (finally)

I've had this cart since I was a kid. I remember I bought it thinking (hoping) it was the same cool beat 'em up as the arcade, and was kinda disappointed to find out it was a side scroller.

This is the first time I've beaten it. Like I said in my post above, I found it to be a repetitive chore. From having to grind at the beginning to level up your power meters in order to have a chance... to some of the cheap instant-death floor beams near the exits of some of the later levels... to getting sent back multiple stages when you die, and having repeat the same stages over & over... to the obscure-as-hell pattern required to beat Red Skull (final boss)..

Anyone else who frequents this thread play/beat this game recently? What did you think of it?

  • Boulder Dash is done! I've tinkered with this game over the years and I'm really pleased to finally cross it off the list.

I've beaten it a couple of times for this thread in recent years. I like the game overall, but I also think it's flawed. I liked the Captain's arsenal of attacks, but was less impressed by his sidekick Hawkeye. And I actually preferred this platformer to either the SNES or Genesis ports of the beat 'em up Avengers game.

I also found the game too repetitive. The levels and bosses are a bit too similar, even before you start getting knocked several cities back as punishment for dying. Having to recross the whole country to get back to Red Skull is especially aggravating. It's really quite a chore to get to the end screen on this one, but it is satisfying to beat Red Skull.
  • Jurassic Park is done.
  • I've been working on Dragon's Lair lately. I loathe this game.

I really agree with your thoughts on the game. I really want to like it, but it's just a lot longer and more boring than it needs to be.

I played some more World GP tonight. Progress was much slower tonight. Got to Level 5 race 2. The races in Level 5 are much harder. Just the qualifying times to get to the actual races are a lot tighter. Took me many many tries to get 1st in the first 2 races of Level 5, but I really think it's going to be worth the pain. Since you win a level by points and the last track is always a new track to me if I get to the last few races with enough of a lead (1st gets 5 points 2nd gets 3 so the 2 point gap can be significant after a few races and give me a lot of breathing room) it lets me slack off at the end with the tracks I don't know as well at this point in the game.

yeah it's really just knowing which races you can win easily and which are okay if you don't, the game is definitely difficult but it's never unfair or cheap so the challenge is enjoyable

  • Rockin' Kats is done.
  • Finally finished DW3. In the end, I went Pilgrim->20, Sage->41, Soldier->99, got a bunch of seeds to just about max out her stats...then realized I couldn't finish Zoma. I was able to kill his minions and get to him a few times, but couldn't do enough damage without running out of MP. I think it's possible, but I only had 98 MP since I had changed over so early. Might have also been possible if I had chosen a fighter in place of soldier for the final transformation.

Ended up leveling my Hero up from 0 exp to ~42 and finishing the game with two characters. Attached my final stats for the Soldier (with Meteorite Armband).

This game was fantastic as always, my favorite on the system.
  • i did ghoul school last week but i forgot to post, i had never beat the game before and i used arnpoly's walkthru from his website it was pretty quick finish

  • Adventure Island down. Jesus Christ, it might be the hardest NES game I've ever beaten.

    image
  • I've been working on Adventures of Dino Riki. Classify this one in the "bullshit-hard" shmup category, along with the likes of Star Soldier, Star Force, Sky Shark, & Silkworm (w/heli).

I've gotten to 4-3 which is close, so hopefully I can get lucky one time and pull it off.
