Dragon Warrior IV cover art
---
Maybe this is old news but I've looked at this artwork many times and never realized until now that the guard of the sword, when viewed right side up, ie, the green enamel looking part, is in the shape of a dragon with an orb in its mouth. Realized a few years back - thanks to Eric Szymczak that the painting is an illustration of the Zenithian Sword that you get late in the game. Anyways, just wanted to share this neat little detail to the illustration, as a post on the artbook group made me see this for this first time just now. Is this common knowledge? Or newly discovered?

It just always seemed really obvious to me.
If I'm understanding your post correctly, you never noticed the dragon on the hilt?

Do you stand on your head a lot?
I can get having seen it before, sure, but I wouldn't call it obvious at all until you turn it upside down.
On the facebook group, no one seems to have noticed before. But, I know how it is, when you see something you can't unsee it, and then it seems obvious.
I have 15/20 vision and I stand on my head a lot and still missed it.

Here in Canada our boxes come in upside down and we have to manually flip em over. Damn French. ;P
Nah I totally getcha man, once you see it it's like how did I ever not? I can see how you might miss it though, just pokin some fun.
Had I not been such a monumental geek, I probably wouldn't have seen it either.
So, I've noticed it before but not because of any cool observation skills, I've only seen it because of a lack of friends as a kid. Whenever there was an image of game stuff like that on a box/manual/whatever, I would blow them up on the copy machine in my mothers office, and then make grainy, upscaled, B/W cardboard weapons to play with. That DW sword and the Master Sword from OoT were some of my favorites because you could get decent copies of part of the blade to the pommel in one shot.

I dunno man that sounds pretty cool.

You should have seen the wooden Sword of Omens my older brother helped me make, it was surprisingly cool but hurt a lot more than cardboard when my little brother hit me with it.
Another time, my parents had just had all these wooden-slatted closet doors put up in the basement to hide stuff like the water heater/washer/dryer, and I systematically removed like half the wooden slats to make a full compliment of LoZ weapons and equipment. Like, I even had a bunch that I laid flat and taped together to use as a small raft to cross any “water” I might encounter. They were perfect, about a foot or so long, an inch wide, and maybe an 8th thick.
Man, my parents weren’t nearly as impressed as I thought they’d be when they got home that night and I showed them my new gear...
Love those drawings with subtle hidden art within the main art. It's like a "Where's Wally" without you knowing Wally was there all along!
One should always know where Wally is at all times.
