Your Worst Bubble Mailer Stories??

I went from complete heart attack to simply dumbfounded with this one after seeing that the game is relatively unscathed. It may have received slight corner wear from rubbing but it didn't get any crushing or squishing which is quite frankly a miracle.  Though it came UPS instead of USPS, not sure if that had anything to do with it...

Yes, seller knew what they had, this wasn't some old lady selling games for $5 each or anything like that.  The seller knew they had a rare game, knew the value of the cart and we negotiated price of the CIB.  I sent the generic "please pack well, please notify me when shipping" and I assumed that due to value the seller would actually pack with care.  Sure enough, bubble mailer shows up on my doorstep.

Either way, I was expecting a CIB with a Very Good box and nice contents and that's what I got.  Guess I dodged a bullet here but I'm sure others have not been so lucky.  What's the worst you've seen?

  • Wow, impressive outcome.
  • Thats bananas! I've had quite a bit of bad luck lately most of which involve bubble mailers. Friggin things suck!
  • I've been fortunate that every game I've ordered so far has made it to me safely in bubble mailers. That being said, I personally ship CIB stuff inside another box, and generally with a box protector, everything else of value <$60 goes in the bubble mailer. The only bubble mailer damage I've ever had comes from electronic components (Particularly ICs) in which the shipper didn't put in some foam. The punch out voice CPU that I just got a couple weeks ago for my arcade board had a bunch of bent pins because of this.
  • I recently received Little Dragons Cafe Limited Edition for the Nintendo Switch in just paper wrapping, which I would say it a step below bubble mailer. Basically, just wrapped in brown paper and no protection at all. Of course, it came damage all around.
  • I've had multiple people send original game boy boxes to me in bubble mailers. I'd say about 80% of the time they experienced some form of crushing and permanent crease lines, at the very least, on the sides of the box because of this. I'm glad you fared so well with a very htf and expensive snes title!
  • I don't know that I could even insert and remove that from a bubble mailer without damaging it.

My worst bubble mailer stories are the the ones that I won't go through the hassle to return, like when I got Pokemon Lets Go from Best Buy on sale and it came crushed, but my fiance just wanted to play the game so it's not like I'm going to return it and roll the dice for a nice one. Or when I buy a 9/10 box and it comes in 8/10 condition and decide life is too short and I'll just be sad about it forever
  • Recently I bought a factory sealed Nes TMNT and it was shipped in a bubble mailer. It got crushed. People are rediculous. I don't care if someone knows about retro games or not. The ending price should have made the seller want to protect the game even more.
  • Years ago I bought an NES Action set and it was just wrapped in brown paper. It didn't appear to be damaged at all but I don't understand not putting an item like that in a proper box.
  • Wow glad that made it ok Jone...

Nothing on the top of my head comes to mind but im sure ive gotten several crushed games over the years for this reason.
  • I feel for you CIB collectors.
  • Saturn games in bubble mailers.... ugh

RIP those hinges. I've had way too many DOA Saturn cases cracked from buying online. You need to ship those in boxes. It's so frustrating.

  • i only ever had 1 CIB NES game (Rad Racer) sent to me in a bubble mailer,

and the seller had flattened the box.....

which turned out okay for me, as i had only bought the CIB for the 3d glasses....

which was the only thing i was missing from my collection's CIB copy at that time.

but expensive shite like that SNES game, you should ALWAYS ask the seller to use an actual shipping box...

don't just ask for them to "please pack well" , because then this shite happens...
  • Anything that can easily be broken or cracked or crushed etc I ship in a box no matter what the value is.

Shipping in a box doesn't cost any more money than to ship a bubble mailer, it's just lazyness on the shippers part.

I'd argue it's actually cheaper. I have more spare boxes than I know what to do with, and I'm always annoyed when I have to buy bubble mailers. They're not exactly meant for reuse.

Not defending the practice of shipping boxes in mailers but yes it costs a chunk more to ship something in a box in the US. For cheaper items costing 3 dollars to ship vs 5 if the item is 7-8 dollars is a difference. Box adds minimum 4 ounces to weight for the smallest boxes.

Now pending where the box goes in the US. Coast to Coast shipping is outrageous and shoots up pretty quick. If I ship an item in a mailer, which I dont do for items that can easily be crushed, I know the consequences and am prepared to refund. Cheap small items are going in mailers.

Now Jone. That is horrific. If I sold that to someone it would be going Express 2 day with insurance in a box with nice wall of padding. Like one of those egg drop projects from school project days. Shipping that in a mailer seems like an april fools joke

kraft mailers cost me .12 cents. I get large bubble poly mailers from ebay supplies with store coupon. Boxes for most established not once in a while sellers will always cost more.

Boxes add a minimum of .50 cents and more likely a 1.00+ to any shipment

  • I've had quite a few damaged items sent this way, as well as a few that made it miraculously without as much as a dent. For the ones that get damaged, most annoying thing about this is when you confront the seller about it and they're like "I've never had a problem before!"

    a) How?

    2) I don't believe you.

III) You've got a problem now.
  • Glad your game didnt get crushed at all. Crazy that he would do that with an expensive item.Unbelievable.

Only time its happened to me was 2 or 3 CIB's that i won very very cheap over 6,7 years ago and i was still upset with the sellers and let them know.
  • automatic for me when I buy an item, before I paid, I message seller saying : ''As a collector, condition means everything, so make sure it's carefully packed in a bigger hard box with a lot of bubble wrap. I'll paid as soon as you confirm you read this message.''
  • I got Rocket knight CIB for like $20 and they shipped in in a cheapo $1 bubble mailer. Somehow it made it without a chip on the box or scratch.

HOWEVER....................... They took the time to fold in instruction manual into a square and secure it with a rubber band so it wouldn't get damaged.
  • Haha, $2500 dollar game and couldn't be bothered for an extra $2 dollars for shipping materials. Glad that made it ok, though.

That's very cheap for mailers. I will admit that I very rarely sell+ship, though... if I were running any decently-sized operations I'm sure my box supply would vanish overnight.

Well, that would raise the average cost of shipping materials, so...
  • Yikes, that's rough. I would never in a million years ship anything in a box or jewel case in a bubble mailer. Loose carts are fair game however.

Giving me flashbacks to collecting PS1 long boxes.  Nothing like sliding a game out of a bubble mailer and having the hinges come tumbling out afterwards.

  • I'm often willing to ship a single-CD game in a bubble mailer and I've had no issue. I've also received these types of games that way and the only issue I had once was a purchase of about 10 games from Lukie Games (or JJ Games) that came in a padded back and one of the games was somehow completely mangled.

I'm pretty sure that this damage is happening either at the PO that received the package or the one doing the delivery. Possibly even in the trucks. I tend to think that because some people have more than a couple "horror" stories of damaged packages where as someone like myself who's received hundreds and hundreds of packages between my wife and I, have only seen probably 2-3 damaged items in a few years. Also, if I had to venture a guess on why some areas might be better than others, I'd guess volume. I live in a small rural town, surrounded by farm country. I guess, comparatively, my local PO just doesn't have to sort through and "hustle" through as many packages as others. But, that's just a guess.
