Numbers printed on the back of NES carts

Hey guys,

Excited to join the community!

I've recently been reading the forum and WATA site about spotting stuff and I noticed something on the back of all of my carts.  They all seem to have a number printed on them.  Like, My SMB is 00, KI is 05, Kung Fu is 07, Zelda is 12, MT Punch Out is 21, Metal Gear is 24.  Anyone know what these mean??

  • Hey it's the CHUD
  • Manufacturing number. Most games had 2 digits, but there were a few LJN/Acclaim published games that had 4 letters.

A particular game could have as many as 4-5 different 2-digit codes on the back, depending on how many print runs it had.

The Bootgod NES database site is a good reference for checking these (though it doesn't have 100% of them):

Bootgod is ok for referencing the two digit code but like you said it’s not 100%

for example one copy of excitebike will have a 00 two digit code while another copy will have 07

Bootgod ony archives one two digit code for each game.

Also so no one really knows what two digit code was assigned for each manufacturer. 24 is common on Konami carts but not the only two digit code Konami used.

I used to think this as well, but it's not true. Bootgod does archive many. At the top-right of the bootgod pages for each game is a "More Profiles" box containing numbered links. Each link can have different a 2-digit code.

    In the case of Excitebike, it has 9 different links, with 5 different 2-digit codes: 00, 05, 08, 09, & 12. Links 3 & 5 show 5-screw.

My brother! Thank you!!! It was upsetting thinking there was no way to reference if a back had been swapped. This helps a little more! Thank you!
  • awesome guys, sorry for the repeat question. And yes! Tis I, the Chud :-D

No prob, glad to help! I was in the same boat as you before I discovered this. I was baffled, wondering why about 1/3 of my carts didn't match up with what Bootgod was showing. Especially some that I am the original owner of.
  • Bootgod also has a timeline and distribution chart of the back codes.

I never realized there were actually so few of them, so I think they *do* have some kind of purpose. I always thought that they go from 00 - 28, but it seems there's only like a dozen or so numbers. Notably missing is 06, 10, 13-16, 18, 25, and 26. There are also very, very few 03 and 23...and even a 34 of all numbers.

Why hasn't anyone really looked into this all these years?
