Mystery character in Reggie's goodbye portrait

The Mario statue is in front of a character that the folks on Reddit are having trouble identifying, and it's got me wondering too.



Anyone recognize this... hand?



The portrait is a gift to him from Retro Studios, so is likely one of their IP... but who? Speculation thus far has been a totally new IP...

    I don't know, but that black book looks WAY too close some sort of obituary or memorial book or whatever you'd see at a funeral! The guy's retiring early to enjoy the rest of his life, which may well be the best life he ever gets, and you're giving him a book that looks like he died!



    Come to think of it, since when are retirement books even a thing, lol?

    Lmao the VB came out before 2003, and the butt cheeks, and the flowers/book almost like a funeral. Sweet art/signatures tho!

    The butt cheeks are in reference to one of his first public meetings where he declared that Nintendo was there to "kick ass". Maybe the hand is the "Reginator" peaking out from behind Metroid and we wanted to cover up the second image of himself. Who knows, really.

    It looks like there is more to this character along the left of Mario's arm. I almost thought it was an extension of Samus's Arm cannon, but it's not. It goes down further than where Samus's arm cannon ends

    They worked on Star Fox on GC, which would mean thats probably Rob64's hand. Which would make sense.
    Nintendo is due for a new game from all three of those franchises.
